  2. 2. Reconstruction <ul><li>13 th , 14 th , and 15 th amendments passed: </li></ul><ul><li>13 th - abolished slavery. </li></ul><ul><li>14 th - equal rights to all citizens. </li></ul><ul><li>15 th - gave all black men the right to vote. </li></ul>

Reconstruction (cont.) <ul><li>Black codes: </li></ul><ul><li>Little laws that kept blacks from being able to vote. </li></ul><ul><li>These included the poll tax, the literacy test, and the grandfather clause. </li></ul><ul><li>All of these made it nearly impossible for a black man to vote in any election. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Reconstruction (Cont.) <ul><li>Jim Crow Laws: </li></ul><ul><li>Segregated whites and colored people. </li></ul><ul><li>Ku Klutz Klan: </li></ul><ul><li>Often used violence, fear, and intimidation to keep blacks from voting. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Slavery “ends” <ul><li>Although the 13 th amendment abolished slavery, some former slaves were pulled back in to another form of “slavery” called sharecropping. Sharecropping was kind of like slavery in disguise. Plantation owner would have workers in the fields and the former slaves would have a share of the crops which they were farming. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Amnesty Act <ul><li>Forgave all southerners except confederate leaders. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Soldiers return home <ul><li>When soldiers in the South returned home from battle, they found their home in ruins. There animals had been shot and their crops had been burned. They were left with hardly anything. </li></ul><ul><li>This was called Total War </li></ul>
