3. The Outreach for Medicine team from King’s College London School
of Medicine works to encourage and enable young people living in
London, Kent and Medway to study at medical school or to train for
careers in the health service or biomedical sciences.
The outreach activities are designed to familiarise local students, parents
and teachers with the requirements of a career in the medical professions
and to introduce them to ways of gaining the skills and experience
needed to make such a career a reality.
You may attend any session that interests you, but you will get most out of them if you attend the whole series.

MED-VIEW
This three-day intensive course runs from 11-13th April
2011, and is designed to give Year 12 and access course
students an opportunity to find out what life is like as a
medical student and a doctor.
Group Mentoring
The aim of the mentoring scheme is to prepare you to enter
medical school and ultimately the medical profession. The
group workshop sessions are led predominantly by senior staff
in the medical school and are supported by medical students
from the EMDP and MBBS programmes. The usual format is
a 30-40 minute presentation from a member of staff, followed
by small-group work with a current medical student.
All the workshops will take place in the Henriette Raphael
Function Room, on the Guy’s Hospital site at London Bridge
at 5pm.
Worshipful Company of Barbers’ Science and
Medicine in Action lecture series 2010-11
The Science and Medicine in Action lectures are available
to all science AS/A2 level and access course students in
London, Kent & Medway. The lectures are given by research
scientists and medical doctors and are designed to broaden
your understanding, boost your independent study skills,
make you think differently about scientific issues, and help
you to gain insight into the wide range of different medical
specialties that exist.
All the lectures will take place in the Harris Lecture
Theatre, on the Guy’s Hospital Site at London Bridge at 5pm.
There is no simple checklist of activities
that will guarantee you a place at medical
school but there are, however, a few things
you should really try and do:
• Arrange work experience at a hospital
or GP surgery and/or voluntary work
in a hospital. If this is not possible to
arrange, volunteer to help out in an
old people’s home or a day centre for
people with disabilities instead
• Investigate areas of science that
interest you by getting involved in
extra-curricular activities such as our
Worshipful Company of Barbers’
Science in Action lecture series.
• Find out what life at medical school
is like and what it means to be a
doctor today. You could do this by
talking to your GP or by attending
the Worshipful Company of Barbers’
Medicine in Action lecture series
or Group Mentoring workshops.
At these activities you will get
the opportunity to hear talks from
current doctors about the realities
of being a doctor and speak with
current medical students about their
experiences.
• You may also like to apply for MED-
VIEW, our three-day intensive
medical conference. This will give
you a good insight as to what it would
be like to study medicine.
The following activities are designed
to increase your knowledge about
different scientific issues, increase your
awareness about the realities of studying
and practising medicine and enhance
your medical school application and
interview.
As part of its 700th anniversary activities,
the Worshipful Company of Barbers
launched an appeal amongst its members
which has enabled the Company to
support the outreach work of Outreach
for Medicine for at least seven years.
In the Middle Ages, barbers once
practised surgery as Barber-Surgeons. The two skills
separated when the surgeons left in 1745, ultimately to
form the Royal College of Surgeons. Now nearly half of the
Barbers’ Company members are from medical disciplines and
the Company’s charitable activities are focused on medical
education.
