Introducing NIXTY - Empowering Education for Everyone!

Published on

This presentation introduces NIXTY - a web-based educational platform that provides free and premium ePortfolios, courses, continuing education suites, and learning management systems. NIXTY is used to illustrate viral growth, social media marketing, and search engine optimization. Sales strategies (agnostic platform vs. highly segmented; or both?) are contrasted and discussed. Finally, we share our hypotheses that we'll be testing over the next several months. For example, we know institutions purchase learning management systems/course management systems, but we don't know that people will use and invite people to use ePortfolios.

Introducing NIXTY - Empowering Education for Everyone!

 1. 1. Empowering Education for Everyone William and Mary November 18, 2009
 2. 2.

LinkedIn + Blackboard = NIXTY

NIXTY is a global learning platform that provides free and premium courses, ePortfolios, and learning management systems.

The Web’s Educational Operating System

 3. 3.

NIXTY, LLC, is located in Norfolk, VA. NIXTY will enter private beta in December.

Heritage of founding team:

Strong executive team with expertise in LMS/CMS industry, security, and online advertising. Proven ability to build systems that scale.

 4. 4.

Our Global Student: Teacher ratio is 300:1.

Commercial and Open Source LMS Costs Are Too Expensive and/or Require Too Much Expertise

States, Colleges, Private Universities, K-12 Schools are all dramatically cutting their budgets

Many educators and academic institutions do not have access to teaching and learning technology.

 5. 5.

42% of teachers are retiring in the next 5-10 years

Severe shortage of AP courses and other courses because a lack of qualified teachers, particularly in rural and urban areas

JPMorgan estimates that state and local governments will need to cover 1.3 billion in health care costs. This will cause many to dramatically cut education costs.

Local Example: Virginia Beach is cutting special education and mainstreaming students that were not previously part of the main classroom.

Hawaii has cut 20 days from the school schedule

School districts around the nation have cut jobs and programs. The stimulus has greatly helped, but will end in the near future.

 6. 6.

Maximizes teacher bandwidth

Provides free tools to students, educators, and institutions

Offers robust, hosted, learning management system for 20% of the cost of commercial LMS and for less cost than hosting open source solution.

Provides free courses to students - Unlocks OpenCourseWare - NIXTY is the glue that optimizes content across the Web

 7. 7.

5 Reasons to

Create an ePortfolio

1. Define your space on the Web 2. Post your CV or Resume 3. Display your work 3. Help get a job or into college/graduate school 4. Network with other educators, mentors, and students 5. Attract students for courses you are teaching on NIXTY

 8. 8.

All the functionality you find in Blackboard: discussion, tests, gradebook, sequenced learning, groups, calendar etc.

Can be public or private courses

If educator charges a fee via our payment system, then we collect a 20% fee.

 9. 9.

Robust functionality at 20% of the cost of commercial systems and less than hosting costs for open source solutions

0-49 accounts for Free to start using the system

Can opt to advertise courses on the public side to attract students.

 10. 10.

Off the Shelf CE or CEU solution for academic institutions and companies looking to provide continuing education.

LMS functionality + certificate engine that allows the person to print up a certificate at the end of the course if they have passed the criteria.

Same pricing as the LMS.

CEs or CEUs are accessed through the institution’s website, but are also available through NIXTY’s public side.

 11. 11. Courses Student Educator Organization Self-Paced Public Self-Paced Premium Self-Paced Private Instructor Led Public Instructor Led Private Instructor Led Premium Continuing Education Sample College Course Learning Management Systems Continuing Education Suites Internal Courses (All courses taken by students at the institution) Internal CE’s (All CEs taken by people through the institution)
 12. 12.

UNESCO - 2 trillion dollars is annually spent on education.

Blackboard – $300MM annual revenue; over 3,500 clients; extremely vulnerable to disruption

The LMS/CMS industry is experiencing strong growth (26%+) and that is primarily in healthcare and higher education.

The K-12 (98,000 schools in the US) market and international market is just beginning to take root.

 13. 13.

In 2007 there were 1,000,000 online enrollments (just 1% of market). By 2014, 25% of high school courses will be online. By 2019, 50% of high school courses will be online. There are over 55,000 middle schools and high schools in the US alone

 14. 14.

INSTITUTIONS : academic, corporate, non-profit

EDUCATORS : teachers, professors, trainers.

LEARNERS : K-12, college students, homeschoolers, test-prep (eg., GMAT), lifelong learners, and professionals (CEUs)

 15. 15.

Institutions without a Learning Management System:

90,000 K-12 schools in the US with no LMS.

Hundreds of thousands of K-12 schools, colleges, technical, corporations, and non-profits throughout the US, Europe and late-developing world that do not have a LMS.

Educators without ePortfolios:

11 million educators do not have an ePortfolio or a LMS available to them, and would greatly benefit from this technology.

Moodle Users:

Moodle users that have low technical expertise and low implementation will find NIXTY to be very attractive. We estimate that this segment includes: 20-25,000 institutions; 1,000,000 educators, and 7,000,000 users.

 16. 16.

Institutions :

3,500 Charter Schools – Innovative, Supported by Government, Experiencing Growth

Continuing Education Providers

Learners:

Homeschoolers – 2MM and growing

CLEP Students

Educators:

Faculty in Undergraduate and Graduate Education Programs

Distance Education Faculty

 17. 17.

Commercial LMS Vendors – Blackboard

NIXTY Advantage: 10-25% of the cost; Greater scholastic, research, and content sharing opportunities.

Open Source Products – Moodle

Requires hosting and IT expertise to customize

NIXTY Advantage: Our product is hosted and can easily be customized for free.

Web 2.0 Applications – LearnHub

NIXTY Advantage: These applications offer some of the features offered in NIXTY, but they do not seem to really understand the needs of educators or academic institutions.

 18. 18.

Platform – agnostic platform that can be used by any segment and sub-segments. For example, NIXTY as a platform that the broad institution segment can harness as well as institutional sub-segments like: charter schools, community colleges, K-12 schools, non-profits, companies, churches etc.

Narrow Segment – focus specifically on charter schools  Build a foothold in this space  leverage network effects  dominate that segment

BOTH?  Agnostic Platform that anyone can use, but invest marketing resources on specific segments (e.g., charter schools)

 19. 19.

Hotmail Example – the beginning. “P.S. I love you. Get your free email at hotmail.com

Meme – needs to take root and replicate in specific populations (ideas/products get adapted and grow in networks. Need to choose networks/populations carefully. NIXTY = education networks)

Easy to sign up and get started

Login w/Facebook Connect and/or Friend Connect from Google (research suggests increase of 30%)

Email Address book imports and email invites

People are incentivized to invite others – Karma points

 20. 20.

Appeals to both the user and the viewer (Choy, 2009). Users of the product have to like it, but viewers of the product have to like it and tell others about it. e.g., courses

Double Viral Feedback Loops – people can join and then start their own courses, creating 2 invitational loops (the main network [NIXTY proper] and then sub-networks [courses])

Recommend Students/Educators/Trainers

Suggested Users you may know (In NIXTY’s case based on content areas, college affiliation, other contacts)

 21. 21.

“ Make it EFFICIENT to spread your site

Give people an INCENTIVE to send it to their friends

Have a GREAT product that keeps people around and spreading it through time”

Need to penetrate networks/markets that can reach critical mass – Moore’s Crossing the Chasm

 22. 22.

Wikipedia: is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results as opposed to search engine marketing (SEM) which deals with paid inclusion.

Google Juice (Jeff Jarvis) -- drive traffic and students to educators/trainers and institutions

Modifying Content; A/B Testing;

 23. 23.

1. User comes to the site

2. User writes an article

3. Article is then published to a unique URL

4. URL is then crawled

5. URL is then indexed

6. Keywords are then searched

7. URL then shows up in the search result page

8. URL is then clicked on

9. Then a user ends up back on the site

 24. 24.

Content is open, easily produced, and searchable

Courses – syllabi, lessons, ppts, html pages – all content is easily searchable

ePortfolios – CV/Resume word documents are converted into Web pages and become searchable – different from PDF pages that are linked in university profiles (not as readily searchable)

 25. 25.

Need to find ways to attract/acquire users through viral growth and SEO, but that is only part of the story. Need to retain those same users .

LMS/CE Suite – private side – retention is built into it.

Students – public side – return to take courses, take CEs or CEUs learn something new, participate in study groups, learning competitions, support others, update ePortfolio

Educators – teach courses, use tools to save time and energy, network with other teachers, make money, find curriculum/share resources

 26. 26.

Facebook – create a fan page

Twitter – follow leading others, send out tweets that advertise your product; offer special deals

Blog – get a company blog and use tools like Delicious or StumbleUpon

Visit other blogs, drop your URL in the provided space, and add value to the conversation

Share valuable information/insight w/ journalists

 27. 27.

NIXTY utilizes a diversified business model that generates multiple streams of revenue by selling:

Premium Accounts – ePortfolio and course upgrades

LMS - main driver of revenue

Advertising – tailored and contextual (Quigo/AOL)

Marketplace (in future)- allows people and publishing companies a place to easily sell learning materials.

Assistants (in future) – uses AWS MTurk service for educators and researchers to outsource tasks.

 28. 28.

NIXTY offers a robust LMS that is hosted, feature-rich, and extraordinarily affordable. Support is included in the below prices.

# of Users NIXTY Annual Cost Other LMS Providers 1000 Users $4,000 $40,000 3000 Users $16,000 $60,000 8,000 Users $24,000 $110,000
 29. 29.

Institutions (Businesses, Colleges, K-12 schools) regularly purchase, integrate, and depend on learning management systems.

Institutions need to find easy ways to provide continuing education units to their employees and other professionals that need to take CEs to maintain their licenses.

 30. 30.

People and institutions will use ePortfolios and tell others about them.

Learners (homeschoolers, non-traditional students, professionals) will take free and paid courses to: learn new content, CLEP out of courses, increase test scores (test-prep), & learn new skills.

Educators/Trainers will use free and premium courses to teach learners and increase their income.

People will optimize opencourseware and other content and develop and/or build on courses to provide a p2p learning platform.

Providing free ePortfolios and courses will result in people buying LMS and CE Suite products.

 31. 31.

Do you think NIXTY can become the Educational Operating System of the Web? Why or why not?

Do you think we can utilize a marketing approach that embraces an open platform and focuses on narrow segments (i.e., charter schools)?

 32. 32.

If you:

Are passionate about education

Are interested in being part of tech startup

Want to learn social media marketing

Are hard working, creative, and outgoing

Then:

We’d like to talk with you about an internship opportunity. Talk to me after class or give me a call (757) 581-9216 or email: glen@nixty.com
