Sustainable Housing in Metro Boston Jennifer M. Raitt Chief Housing Planner
Promote equitable and affordable housing by emphasizing affordable housing options in segregated suburban neighborhoods; an increase in the production of smaller units in transportation efficient locations; and interventions to prevent displacement, foreclosures, and homelessness.

Develop coordinated regional and local plans for diverse housing production
Increase affordable housing production in appropriate locations
Diversify overall housing supply and affordability
Connect residents to housing opportunities
Ensure fair and accessible housing
Preserve, maintain, and upgrade existing affordable housing stock
MetroFuture Housing Strategies
Both projects will collect data about housing needs in the region and the constraints and opportunities that enable or prevent attainment of housing goals.
The RHP will recommend policies to encourage housing development and preservation that meets current and projected needs in an equitable manner.
The RAI will recommend policies that influence housing development and preservation at all levels of the housing market, identifying specific activities and entities to address identified impediments.
1) A detailed assessment of current housing needs 2) An analysis of how the region’s changing demographics, market forces, development constraints and opportunities are likely to influence future housing needs 3) Targets the amount of housing that will need to produced in order for the region to meet its future housing needs (down to the municipal level) 4) Targets of the types of housing that will need to be produced in order for the region to meet its future housing needs (down to the subregional and Community Type level RHP Plan Elements
5) Identification of specific action strategies, on the local, regional, and state levels, which will help to ensure that the region meets its 2030 housing needs, consistent with the MetroFuture vision, as identified in the RHNA. Research employer-assisted housing options and programs, then establish broad support from the private sector by collaborating to leverage private funds to support the necessary link between housing and employment, including promoting greater engagement of private entities in Employer-Assisted Housing programs.
