Be an Organizer <br />In social networks, online groups behave a lot like offline groups. <br />To be effective in this environment, you have to behave like an organizer: identify and develop leadership and encourage supporters to reach out to each other. <br />Bring people together and give them the tools to act on behalf of your Association’s shared values. <br />Build a network of relationships that is deep enough to provide a foundation for community action--and offer social rewards for individual action.<br />

Fit Social Networking into Your "Ecosystem" <br />Social networking "part of a participatory ecosystem." <br />How does this fit within the broader context of what you want to accomplish in your Association? <br />Do you have other ways for people to participate? <br />Think about complementary ways in which people can take action and communicate. Most important, create mechanisms to motivate offline action. <br />In-person meet-ups have been shown to make people more likely to become an activist.<br />

Your role is to provide structure and guidance and to encourage communication among supporters.<br />The first part of this task is to define multiple ways in which supporters can take action and meet each other. Fortunately, social networks were designed with participation in mind. Use your network's built-in tools to encourage involvement.<br />

Developing a Community Strategy<br />“Build it and they will come” doesn’t work!<br />Key goals to keep in mind:<br />#1: Help people work together <br />#2: Adoption can not be mandated <br />#3: Don’t assume everyone works the same way <br />#4: Liberate information <br />#5: Develop strategies for group engagement<br />#6: Identify specific ways to measure and evaluate community-building efforts<br />

Make a List of actions <br />How will members interact with one another on your site? <br />What are you asking them to do? <br />What actions and behaviors are valued?<br />Who are the leaders and followers?<br />Develop a list of actions that you'd like supporters to take and create easy pathways for supporters to perform these actions.  <br />
    57. Challenges and Opportunities <br />The popularity of specific networks will shift, feature sets will expand, and you will sometimes have positive, and sometimes negative results. Regardless of all the changes, social networking is here to stay. <br />The concepts that underpin social networking are becoming the trends shaping the Internet, commerce, and social life online and offline. <br />
    58. Online connections are strengthening offline relationships. <br />Social networks have become places in which life happens--but it's the life of people networked to every other computer user on the planet.<br />
