These are the class preparation sheets for my EDP 370: Applied Child Development Course. This course is taught as a 'hacked' course. Lectures are prerecorded for students to listen to at home, we complete activities in-class. The culminating project is the Children's Thinking Project (adapted from Penelope Oldfather & West, 1999). Thus, we integrated a series of interviews from American Public Media: Dick Gordon's The Story radio program into the pedagogy for students to develop their interviewing skills.

    • 3. Registering your Device on the NCSU Wireless Network • Why? • All need to be on the same network to make some of the collaborative Apps work • On the secure network, can send e-mail from your iPad • Won’t have to type in your Unity ID each time • How? • https://nomad.ncsu.edu/
    • 4. Setting Up an E-mail Account • Microsoft Exchange • NCSU E-mail • Allows both E-mail and Google Calendar • Add Personal Accounts
    • 5. Importing the EDP 370 Google Calendar • Why? • The MOODLE calendar is ‘unwieldy’ for instructors to modify if there are any changes to the syllabus. • Google Calendar allows us to ‘share’ the responsibility for keeping the calendar updated. • You can set up alerts so that you are reminded about upcoming assignments. • Email • Pop-up reminders • How? • Go to Gmail in Safari and sign into your NCSU G-mail account • Go to our MOODLE site (in Safari) -> Touch Shared Calendar Link • Bottom right corner (+ Add this Calendar)
    • 6. Syncing Gmail Calendars • Microsoft Exchange allows you to sync multiple calendars onto your mobile device. But you must ‘tell’ it to sync the calendars. • Go into your Gmail account • Top tool bar select the ‘More’ link • Scroll down to ‘Even More’ • Select the ‘Sync’ link • Select all the Calendars you would like to sync on your iPad. Be sure to select our shared calendar.

Classroom Apps: Reciprocal Teaching • Reciprocal Teaching: “The purpose of reciprocal teaching is to facilitate a group effort between teacher and students as well as among students in the task of bringing meaning to the text.” • Students share responsibility for summarizing, generating questions, clarifying, and applying what they read. Intro to Google FORMS • "The mission of our partnership is, first and foremost, to create a transformative experience for the children in Step-UP Children's program and the future teachers and leaders in NC State's Applied Child Development (EDP 370) course. Students and faculty in EDP 370 strive to serve as mentors creating opportunities for children at Step-UP to systematically reflect on their experiences at school and their understanding of their emerging identities as students. Children at Step- UP, by candidly sharing their experiences contribute to developing more compassionate and effective teachers and community leaders. The mission of our partnership is also to produce new knowledge that can be used to demonstrate the impact of the Children's program and to train future educators and community leaders. As students in EDP 370 develop their skills as careful observers of child thinking and behavior, they will collect data that can be used by the Step-UP and by future students in the class. Moreover, as they learn to evaluate curriculum for its developmental appropriateness, they create a database of curricular materials that can be used by co-partners."
