  4. 4. #nafnext City Polytechnic High School One of 35 NAF career academies in New York City First Unscreened Early College High School in NYC Students can earn both a high school diploma and an Associate’s degree or up to two years of credit toward a Bachelor’s degree Post Secondary Partner City University of New York’s College of Technology Trimester Schedule Students take 7 credit bearing courses each trimester with an extended day schedule High School Requirements completed within 3 Years Students complete an average of 3 years of coursework during their first 2 years and a regular semester schedule in their 3rd year.

  24. 24. #nafnext City Tech Resources for City Poly Students • We started interacting with Student Support Services (some colleges call this office Disability Services) and the ESOL program about 1 year before students enrolled full-time so we could understand their requirements for intake • Training for Special Education teachers to implement student-led IEP meetings to encourage students to self-advocate as they will need to in college
  25. 25. #nafnext City Tech Resources for City Poly Students • Worked with School Psychologist so students could have updated evaluations for college even when it is wasn't "due" according to HS mandated requirements • Coordinated intake interviews at Student Support Services so that students could attend during school day and so that paperwork was complete for referral
  26. 26. #nafnext City Tech Resources for City Poly Students • Provided additional reading and writing skill support at the high school for students in college (e.g., study hall with ESL teacher, weekly check in with Special Education teacher, etc.) • Introduced assistive technology (i.e., Kindle Touch's with "text to speech") for students
  27. 27. #nafnext What Have We Learned • New York City-wide Graduation Rate in 4 years: 61% • City Poly High School Requirements Completed in 3 years: 66% “…low percentage of students graduating college and career ready, particularly students of color, English Language Learners, and students with disabilities. The performance gap between high need and low need districts continues to be nearly 30 percent, with nearly 94 percent of students from low need districts graduating as opposed to only 65 percent of students from high need urban-suburban districts earning a high school diploma. King also said the graduation rate for white students is nearly 28 percentage points higher than the rates for Black and Hispanic students. The college and career readiness gap is even greater.” – nysed.gov
  28. 28. #nafnext What Have We Learned (3rd Year Classes) • 77% of students who originally enrolled, remained at CityTech for the semester (a lower rate of freshman withdrawal than typically found at CityTech which is 30%) • Of those students who continued, 97% received college credit, 33% received an A, 54% received a B, 6% received a C and 2% received a D. • All ELL students who enrolled received credit, earning 2 A's and 2 B's, 73% of the IEP students received college credit and all students designated as IEP and ELL earned college credit.
