Moore Business Advisory Board a success story.  On going practices that you can immediately use to strengthen your Advisory Board.

The mission of University High School is to work as a team of students, teachers, parents, and community members to help our students reach their highest potential and to develop a sense of pride in themselves, their school, and their community. Motto… “Once a Trojan, Always a Trojan.”

Moore Academies at University High School School Application Process  Every 9th and 10th grade student will be in career academy starting 2013-2014 school year  Cesar Chavez Middle School – only middle school in the feeder pattern- 350 students – automatically attend  125 students can be accepted from outside the feeder pattern with the only requirement is to select one of the career academies  No student is denied because of grades, discipline, or attendance issues

Moore Academies Business Advisory Board Board Recruitment:  Waco is a small urban city with limited businesses – it was important to be creative and think outside the box when creating an Advisory Board.  Began with three career academies- Engineering, Business & Finance, and Information Technology.  Targeted businesses that supported these academies and invited them to meet concerning the school and assisting with its growth.

Moore Academies Business Advisory Board Board Recruitment (cont’d)  Explained the NAF Advisory Board Model and opened it up for guests to give feedback on what we could do to get a Board started.  Positive feedback and core group got under way in creating the beginning of the Advisory Board as we know it.  As academies were brought on, businesses were targeted to be invited to join.

Moore Academies Business Advisory Board Board Recruitment (cont’d)  Major recruitment event- Business Advisory Board Recruitment Breakfast  Target businesses not represented that would benefit our academies  Majority of invitees are asked personally by Board Members. Letters of invitation signed by members, followed up by members call to invite them again, and member calls after the recruitment meeting to invite them to join.

Moore Academies Business Advisory Board Board Recruitment (cont’d)  Held each October, the Advisory Board Recruitment Breakfast’s highlights student presentations who have completed internships, the opportunity to share their experiences.  Each academy is also focused with interactive presentations to help visitors understand what students learn in each academy.  Students sell the Advisory Board !!!

Moore Academies Business Advisory Board Board Retention:  Key to retention is having members be a part of the committee structure which allows them to feel that they are contributing to the Board’s goals.  Provide opportunities for members to assist in planning and supporting activities; especially fundraising  This year, we are beginning a Board Member Mentor Program to help new members feel welcomed and vital.

Moore Academies Business Advisory Board  High points in recruiting and retaining advisory board members: Start meetings on time and end on time Join your local chamber of commerce and attend chamber afterhours events to network Network at various community / social events Invite prospective members to the Annual Recruitment Breakfast / Lunch Invite students to tell their Academy Experiences Meet with prospects at their business and bring students along to share experiences

Moore Academies Business Advisory Board Committee Structure:  Curriculum Committee  Review curriculum for authenticity  Provide opportunities for professional development  Set-up real job experiences through project based learning  Organize Speaker’s Bureau to assist students to become college and career ready  Offer externships to assist teachers in integrating authentic learning in curriculum offerings

Moore Academies Business Advisory Board Committee Structure: Fund Raising & Scholarship Committee  Establish fundraising and scholarship goals  Organize fundraising activities including annual 1K and 5K Fun Run and Golf Tournament  Solicit corporate support  Establish application and selection procedures  Plan Scholarship Luncheon Provided $21, 500 in scholarships for 2013 graduates

Moore Academies Business Advisory Board The National Academy Foundation under the direction of Ms. Patricia Smith compiled a Case Study of A J Moore’s Best Practices regarding the Advisory Board. It explains in detail information about the academies and their structure. A lot of the information was discussed in our presentation. We have copies of the report for your review.
