  • This evening I want to acquaint you with an alternative operating system to Windows and MAC. It’s a Linux-based OS called Ubuntu.
  • I tried a Linux OS about 10 years ago. In fact, we were trying to get a SIG (special interest group) going in our club. It was not too successful although the SIG operated for a couple of years. The Linux OS that I tried was very difficult (by today’s standards). There many DOS commands to work through just to load the OS. I remember having to use a DOS command to “mount the floppy drive”. Another to read what was on the FD. Not very friendly.
  • There is a video clip by Nelson Mandela explaining the word on the CD. Mark is the man that flew on the space station with the Russions. Has a Shuttleworth Foundation that fosters open source software. He now lives in London and heads Canonical Ltd.
  • There are many, many people in the world that chaff at the cost and complexity of today’s software. They really started the “open source” movement. There are many Linux-based OS’s around today. They are mostly based on one of several “core” programs. Ub is based on the Debian core with a desktop program called Gnome.
  • Note the progression of names. FF, GG, HH. Requires partitioning hard drive, so not easy to do. I am using a live CD version. I mailed away for a copy of the latest.
  • Browser works just as it does in XP. Also email and Open Office. GIMP is an unfamiliar program to me, but looks like it will do many of the same jobs as Picasa or Photoshop. I have loaded a couple of pix and some music to demo. No Spider Solitaire! Baaaaad. There is a music player called Rhythmbox and a video player called Totem. I’ll demo them in a minute.
  • Hope to get through as many as possible. Ask questions! Last demo is to bring up a ppt file with a summary Using Open Office. Since I am loading and running Ub from a CD and not from my hard drive, it takes a few minutes to load. It looks at what hardware is on my laptop, detects a wireless Internet capability and wireless mouse. On with the demo.
