In this first part of our special webinar series on charity fraud, we help charities understand more about what charity fraud is and how Canadians are reacting to it. We'll cover brand-new survey results from Canadian donors about their experiences, perceptions and heightened concerns relating to charity fraud. White collar crime expert and former RCMP officer, Craig Hannaford from Fraud Squad TV will be joining us, alongside Capital One's fraud team, to provide an inside look at these crimes and tips and best practices to protect your donors' financial information. We'll also discuss how your charity can win a $20,000 donation from Capital One Canada by helping Canadian donors learn more about charity fraud with the Charity Fraud Awareness Quiz.

Capital One Canada and CanadaHelps have partnered to focus specifically about charity fraud… but we often get asked: what is charity fraud?
As part of our work on charity fraud, we’ve surveyed Canadians and believe that there’s a growing need for information and resources around charity fraudThere’s a real risk for every organization in our sector to suffer because of Canadian attitudes and perceptions about charity fraudSo, let’s take a look at some of these attitudes and perceptions now.
Margin of error was +/- 3.1%, 19 times out of 20.Results have been statistically weighted according to most current education, age, gender and region Census data to ensure sample representative of entire adult population of Canada.Follows up on a previous study, so we can see how perceptions and knowledge of charity fraud has changed over timeSurvey results provide background and understanding on current donation activity and perceptions about charity fraud.Results provide insights on what Canadians are doing to protect themselves against charity fraud.Survey findings will serve to help charitable sector and donors better protect themselves against such fraudulent activity
- Despite the economic downturn, the vast majority of Canadians (77%) have made a charitable donation in past 12 monthsCanadians report making 4.8 donations on average per year85% made more than 1 donation50% made between 2-4 donations Women appear to be more charitable than men (81% vs. 72%) Older Canadians (aged 55 and over) more likely to have donated than national average (84% compared to 77%) Canadians living in the Prairies (Man./Sask.) most likely to make donation in past year (86%) and average 6 donations per yearResidents of Quebec and Atlantic Canada are least likely to have made a donation (71%) and average 3.9 donations per year
The real story here is that Survey asked Canadians about their preferred method of donating Most preferred method of donating is writing a cheque (25%), however, this is down 7 points from Nov. 2009 survey (32%)Number of Canadians who prefer to donate online has climbed 8 points since Nov. 2009 survey (14% to 22%)Younger Canadians (18-34 years old) are driving force behind change where almost one-third (31%) prefer to donate online Only 5% prefer donating via door-to-door solicitationSurprisingly, 22% of Atlantic Canadians prefer door-to-door methodOnly 1% prefer donating over the phone
There has been a significant increase in the number of Canadians concerned about becoming victims of charity fraud since Nov. 2009Almost two-thirds (65%) of Canadians expressed concern over becoming a victim to charity fraud, up sharply 14% from just 15 months agoConcern is highest in Quebec (77%) and lowest in the Prairies (42%) Majority of Canadians (77%) clearly believe the risk of charity fraud is greater now than it was 10 years ago61% of Canadians report an increased concern about charity fraud in the aftermath of a natural disaster
only 5% of Canadians report being a victim of charity fraud (unchanged since Nov. 2009 survey)8% of Quebec respondents report being a victim of charity fraud (highest in the country)16% of respondents say they know someone who has been a victim of charity fraud (up 3 points since Nov. 2009)When looked at collectively, more than one-fifth of Canadians have either been or know someone who has been a victim of charity fraud
