As ever, Megan’s parents were completelyoblivious to what their daughter was up to.Their argument had ushered in a new stageto their relationship. They felt morecomfortable with each other and weremuch more open with one another.Little things were changing. Forexample, neither of them were dying theirhair anymore. Both were more comfortablein their own skins and with each other. Besides, h air dye was expensive.
Financially, things were gettingworse. The money to help Emmameant they’d had to stripeverything away. Sell their nicefurniture and replace what theyhad to with the cheapest stuffavailable. Warren had evencarefully taken off their warmbrown wallpaper and sold it asscrap paper.
Megan had tried talking to them againabout her money making schemes, butneither of them wanted to hear it.In fact, they were starting to get angrywith their daughters nagging. Didn’t shethink they knew best?Megan however, felt she did know better. So she decided to go ahead without them.
Megan cornered James andreminded him of her plan. She would never admit it toanyone but herself, but shebullied him into it a little. Initially James was unsure, but he was soon so into his music he didn’t even notice the first punter volunteering some money.
He left the money side of things to Megan. She told him he waspopular, that he was raking it in…Well that was nice to hear but it was the performance he wasenjoying. While playing, he felt confident. He could forget theshy, awkward sim he had been as a child. When anyone recognised him from childhood, they wereamazed at the change in him.
And Megan did her part. She wasalways there collecting money so italways looked like he wasn’t doingwell. People seemed more generous ifthere was less money in his jar.Plus she drummed up interest byclapping, tapping her feet, dancing…Although they shared a father, theylooked nothing alike. James had takenafter his dead mother Miranda, whileMegan had their fathers colouring. Sowhen people saw a pretty teen girlenjoying the music, cajoling them intogetting involved they had no idea shewas part of the ‘act’.
Warren and Teresa didn’tknow where Megan and Jameswere nowadays, but theyseemed very happy when theywere at home.In fact, they had never seenthem get on so well. It was ashame they weren’t includingEmma in whatever they wereup to, but she was busy doingher own thing most of thetime.
If only their crops hadn’t failed. But sims like them were sufferingall over the country, somethingwas killing fruit and veg crops. Themedia was predicting massiveincreases in food prices as a result.Scientists had no answers, and theproblem was too widespread forany kind of financial relief from thegovernment.
They were too busy to thinkmuch about it anyway.Following the total collapse oftheir business they had bothgot basic jobs. Teresa had goneinto admin for a real estateagent, while Warren was in aworkshop following basicinstructions.
After a few weeks of this, James andMegan cornered Teresa and asked for afew words. James hung back and letMegan do the talking.
Megan explained what they hadbeen up to, barely disguising hersatisfaction. She told her motherdespite being yelled atrepeatedly, she had gone alone withthe plan she’d had for ages. Jameshad been busking, they had savedup the money and it was for thefamily. She had James hand the gift with the money over. He was the one who had earned it after all. Teresa drew her into a hug, apologising. She thanked them both from the bottom of her heart, proud of them both.
