Out of the blue, Ambrosereceives a brusque phonecall from a solicitors. Heragent has died in a carcrash, she will get a smallcheque in the post fromthe will. The caller ringsoff abruptly, leaving her inshock. Why did all thoseshe loved have to die?
Bernice wasted no time, and dragged thegrieving Ambrose out for a drink. There wasnothing like drowning your sorrows to well, drown your sorrows.
Bernice suggets she and Ambrose start working together.Ambrose didn’t normally do a lot ofdrinking, but on this particularevening she sunk quite a few. She hadbeen orphaned early, and her agenthad been a surrogate parent for yearsbefore she’d become an adult.
Uncomfortable with the emotionsgoing on, Bernice changed the subject. When her parents had finally died, abit of creative thinking was all she’dneeded to get back on her feet.Ambrose would be fine, because shehad her to help her out.
Bernice thawed enough to let Ambrosehave the hug she so desperately needed. She had meant what she said, she wouldhelp Ambrose out. She just hoped itwouldn’t take too much, or too long.
While her new neighbour had been bumming around (asfar as she could tell anyway) Jen had been much busier. She was constantly practising speeches for interviews, honing her techniques and building her confidence. But asyet, her work had been for vain.
When a call finally came offering her ajob, she played it very cool. She askedabout the pay, even pretended she wasn’tinterested to get it raised a few thousandsimoleans. She was thrilled to bits when theyinformed her she started at the beginningof next week. She was back!
Without really thinking Jen flew upthe stairs to tell the nearest personher good news. After knocking, shesuddenly had reservations. Whatwould Angus care?
She was invited in, and shyly apologised fordisturbing him. She explained how she had justgot a job, and had to tell someone before sheburst! To her surprise, he was delighted for her,and suggested they go out to dinner to celebrate.
Jen dug a dress out of herwardrobe from when sheand Pablo had been dating. It was a lot less flashy thanthe dresses he’d preferredshe wear when they weremarried, and she loved it.She also found herselfunexpectedly excitedabout the prospect ofdinner with a man.
Angus scrubbed up pretty well whenhe was trying, and seemed to be in areally good mood. She got swept up inthe idea of the evening, she giggled, and flirted, never stopped smiling… andfound him to be much better companythan she had ever imagined.
After their meal, Angus suggestedthey walk back and make themost of the beautiful evening. Hetook her through the park, wanting to show her something.
There was a butterflybush, or buddleia inone corner, and therewas a species ofbutterfly that stayedout at dusk. Jenmelted, and gaveAngus a close hug. Shehad completelymisjudged him.
Back home, Jen looked back onthe evening and feels like she’s letherself down. The first sign offriendship from a man and she’sflinging herself at him like adesperate teen. Perhaps shewasn’t over Pablo as much as shethought she was, but there wasno excuse to go googly-eyed overa slob like McKirrick.
Angus on the other hand thought it had been a prettygood evening. It was a bit weird Jen was a politician, hewas normally opposed to the powers that be. But sheseemed cool, and he respected her views. He wrotethat, and about how much he had enjoyed the eveningon his blog and went to bed.
