Simon Lewes washeading out to his shedone morning to find astranger descending thestairs from the upper flat. The man introducedhimself as Patrick Nasir,he and his wife Betty hadjust moved in. Simongreeted him warmly, anelderly couple upstairswouldn’t bother him.
He was invited upstairs to meet Betty and was sat down and told to eat some waffleswith them. He found he liked them both, he got the sense they’d led an amazing lifeand had only recently decided to settle in one place. He could do without Bettyspeculating about his love life though – he knew all too well he was single.
What he had planned in shed would have to wait. Patrick had challenged him to agame of chess and Simon couldn’t resist. It gave them a chance to keep talking too.Simon was right, the Nasirs had lived in almost every country in the world since gettingmarried and had some brilliant stories.
Warren is getting a bitconcerned about theamount of time Megan isspending next-door. Hethinks it’s a bit strange sheand Edward are such goodfriends and hang outwithout Allain. He’s a bitold… Teresa isn’t asconvinced.
But Warren wasn’t going to let it lie. Trinity had been alternative but nice enough, hehadn’t minded his daughter being friends with her. Edward was different.Since he had moved in to number one Warren had noticed how he was in and out atodd hours, with shady looking characters occasionally hanging around. He’d allowedAllain to baby-sit Megan when she was younger, and had no problem with hisdaughters boyfriend. But Edward…
Megan was unaware of her fathers concerns, asshe hardly ever saw him. He was often working, and she was either out or round the Poesons. If she could move in with her boyfriend and his bigbrother she would do.
But when Edward and Allain dropped Megan off one day Warren couldn’t see muchwrong with him. Edward was polite, well spoken, and dressed as if he was off to thegym with his younger brother. Warren couldn’t find it in himself to criticise someonefor whom family was important. He was probably just lonely after losing Trinity.
It was often just Emma andJames at home in the evenings, and they would usually watch tvtogether quietly. One night, James was full of a chance encounter he’d had with the new guy down theroad. James had been admiring the new shed when the guy had gotten really rude –started going on about privacy and trespassing. What a weirdo!Emma was sceptical, he’d been so nice when she had met him before in the bar.
She decided to call round withthe pretence of apologising forJames. Despite all his recentimprovements he couldsometimes still be a little sociallyawkward. On a whim she invited Simon toher age up party next week.
Simon was tempted. This girl… hecould feel something crackling, sparking between them. But heturned her down. So sorry, but hecouldn’t make it.
