  2. 2. During this session, you will: <ul><li>Consider the leadership role that you take on a team; </li></ul><ul><li>Determine your leadership style; </li></ul><ul><li>Reflect on how your time in the US may have changed your approach to leadership. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Leadership… <ul><li>The key to being a successful leader is self-awareness; you must know your own strengths and weaknesses, and you must use your individual strengths to your advantage. Some leaders are dynamic; other leaders are highly skilled at “leading from the back of the room.” </li></ul>
  4. 4. Reflection <ul><li>Take about 10 minutes to think about the following questions. If you like, you may write down your ideas and responses to these questions. </li></ul>

What could you do differently in the future to improve how a team you are working with handles conflict? </li></ul><ul><li>Do you think that you often react to peer pressure when working on a team? What could you do differently in the future? </li></ul>

For the letter that you received the highest score, this is the leadership style that best describes you: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>(A) = Structural </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>(B) = Human Resource </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>(C) = Political Framework </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>(D) = Symbolic </li></ul></ul>
  9. 9. Structural Leadership (A) <ul><li>The &quot;structural&quot; manager tries to design and implement a process or structure appropriate to the problem and the circumstances. This includes: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>to clarify organizational goals </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>manage the external environment </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>develop a clear structure appropriate to task, and environment </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>clarify lines of authority </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>focus on task, facts, logic, not personality and emotions </li></ul></ul>

Human Resource (B) <ul><li>The human resource manager views people as the heart of any organization and attempts to be responsive to needs and goals to gain commitment and loyalty. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The emphasis is on support and empowerment. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>This leader empowers people through participation and attempts to gain the resources people need to do a job well. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>HR managers confront when appropriate but try to do so in a supportive climate </li></ul></ul>
  11. 11. Political (C) <ul><li>The political leader understands the political reality of organizations and can deal with it. He or she understands conflict and limited resources. </li></ul><ul><li>The leader creates scenarios for negotiating differences and coming up with reasonable compromises. </li></ul><ul><li>This leader also works at articulating what different groups have in common and helps to identify ways for groups to work together. </li></ul>
  12. 12. Symbolic (D) <ul><li>Views vision and inspiration as critical; people need something to believe in. Makes people feel that what they do is really important. </li></ul><ul><li>These leaders tend to be very visible and energetic and manage by walking around. </li></ul><ul><li>This leader also works at articulating what different groups have in common and helps to identify ways for groups to work together. </li></ul>

If you have a chance, you may wish to discuss these questions with a trusted friend, colleague, or another Muskie fellow. </li></ul><ul><li>Has your leadership style changed over the past year or several years? </li></ul><ul><li>Why do you think this is? Has it changed as a result of living in the US, going to graduate school, advancing in your career, a change in your family status, growing older and wiser? </li></ul>Leadership Style

Why is it important to understand your leadership style? <ul><li>First goal of the Muskie is for you to, “Strengthen your leadership and technical skills… </li></ul><ul><li>While on the Muskie program, you gained many important skills that made you a leader at your university and will make you a leader in your home country. </li></ul>
  17. 17. Why is it important to understand your leadership style? <ul><li>Are you good at planning? Evaluating? </li></ul><ul><li>Do you understand your groups needs and characteristics? </li></ul><ul><li>Do you set a good example for others? </li></ul><ul><li>It’s important to know which style is best for you so that you can maximize your potential in your career and in your personal life. </li></ul>

Maximizing Your Leadership Style <ul><li>As you return home, keep a few things in mind: </li></ul><ul><li>Not everyone at home will warmly welcome your new or improved approach to leadership. Keep in mind that the American style of leadership that you may have adopted in the classroom might feel strange or awkward in your home country. </li></ul><ul><li>Don’t be afraid to be yourself, to try new approaches to leadership and to share what you learned while in the U.S., but… </li></ul>
  19. 19. <ul><li>Keep an open mind and listen to feedback from your colleagues, and </li></ul><ul><li>Remember that there is no one “right” way to lead. </li></ul><ul><li>Just as you were flexible in adapting to U.S. culture, so will you need to be flexible in adapting your leadership style to your home culture! </li></ul>Maximizing Your Leadership Style
