For the most part, many simple contracts will have clear and easy to understand terms and conditions and shouldn’t present a problem once you and your band have moved past the negotiation stage onto signing.

If you and your band are on a tight budget and can’t afford to hire an attorney, then you may want to check out your local college for a law student to help you with understanding the contract, writing edits or making counter offers.

Protect yourself at all times Before you sign on the dotted line, make sure you read and re-read your proposed music contract from beginning to end, and if you are not sure what a specific point or portion actually means, don’t be afraid to ask for a detailed explanation of the written terms, and don’t sign until you do! From a legal stand point claiming confusion or lack of understanding won’t help you should you be sued in court over breach of contract.

If at any time you or band are unsure or confused over any issues or points in a music contract , remember that it is always better to simply walk away, than to be legally obligated in an unfair or confusing contract!
