Conjugating -er verbs in french

 1. 1. -er verbs
By: Andrea Murray
EDU 290
2. 2. What is an –er verb?
An –er verb is a verb in French that ends in -er
3. 3. Example of –er verbs
Aimer - to like
Parler-to talk
Habiter- to live
Manger -to eat
Porter -to wear
Adorer -to love, to adore
Etudier- to study
Ecouter- to listen to
Travailler-to work
Regarder- to watch
All –er verbs are conjugated the same!
4. 4. All –er verbs are conjugated using the same formula. To demonstrate how to conjugate this type of verb I will be using aimer. But, what you must keep in mind is that the verbs listed in the above slide, and other –er verbs, are conjugated using the same formula.
5. 5. To conjugate an –er verb take off the –er at the end of the verb and replace it with the appropriate ending.
6. 6. -er verb endings
Je - e
J’aimele chien.
Tu -es
Tuaimesle chien.
Il/elle/on –e
Elle aimele chien.
Nous - ons
Nous aimonsle chien.
Vous- ez
Vousaimezle chien.
Ils/elles- ent
Ilsaimentle chien.
7. 7. You might have noticed in the above slide that Je when conjugated with the verb aimer turned to J’aime instead of Je aime. This is because when conjugating with Je if the verb you are conjugating it with starts with a vowel you drop the -e on Je, put an apostrophe after the -j and make the two words one word.
Examples:
Correct:Incorrect:
J’aime le pizza. Je aime le pizza.
J’ecoute a la musique. Je ecoute a la musique.
8. 8. Now it’s your turn!Fill the blank with the appropriate form of the verb listed at the end of the sentence.
1.Nous ______ la tele. (regarder)
2. Tu_______ le pizza. (manger)
3.
