DIY Design workshop presentation 23rd July 2012 - V2

  1. 1. DIY Design Workshop 23rd July 2012
  2. 2. Don’t wait for everything to be perfect… Go for it now!The internet, e-commerce, retail… it’s all dynamic and very social. Release yourideas, products, websites, new logo… on the world. Get the word out there, getpeople talking about you, get into the conversation, market and advertise whatyou do have ready. Don’t wait.. Go for it now!
  3. 3. What is DIY design?Design is the ‘art’ that people use. From the house you live in to the clothesyou wear, to the magazines you read, every human-made object has beendesigned. Graphic design is a particular area of design practice.Do it yourself (DIY) is a term used to describe designing, building, modifying,or repairing of something without the aid of experts or professionals. There arelots of options available online!
  4. 4. Why DIY design?• To save money• To save time• To customize goods to suit your exact needs and interests• To feel less dependent on the professionals• Also to make a good brief for professionals• For pleasure that comes from developing an idea, making it visually real, and sharing it with other people.
  5. 5. What are the Disadvantages?• You are on your own in terms of creativity!• The DIY softwares and websites are user friendly, but you still need some kind of guidance....like this workshop!• DIY design may not be your final design, maybe just a start, so sooner or later you have to get professional help.
  6. 6. DIY logo design As a business owner, it’s important to understand that your logo is your customer’s first real impression of who you are. Be sure to have a logothat represents the essence of your company, the approachability of who you are and a general concept of what you do.
  7. 7. Types of logos:1. Typographic logos:Mostly, a Typographic logo is used to advertise the brand name of an organization. But, to use this kind of logo, your company name should be short as well asmeaningful. In many cases, the designer will alter a typeface to fit the look thecompany wants or they may combine typefaces to create another feeling. For example the FedEx logo strategically altered the typeface to create a forwardmoving arrow between the E and x.
  8. 8. 2. Lock-up logos (or Marks): These are logotypes that use a combination of a graphic (be it an image or some other graphic) and the typographic representation of the company. They are recognized both as a lock-up and separately by each individual piece. When a brand with a lock-up logo becomes successful, they can easily use just theirimage without NEEDING the adjoining type spelling out the name. … but because of their wonderful marketing and recognizable graphic, you also understand this to be the same company This information is gathered from: http://4thleafstudio.wordpress.com/2010/10/19/gs-logo-identity-brand-part-2- logo/
  9. 9. Points to be considered before going for a DIY identity:1. Your Logo should be Simple : simple readable font, simple graphics. For free graphics: http://www.openclipart.org/2. Must be Relevant to Your Business From color scheme to graphics it has to be relevant. For example, if your business is about technology and if you will use Serif font for the logo, it will look unnecessarily formal. (For more details: http://www.esperfonto.com/)3. Resizable Image Should not get pixelated while resizing (for more details: https://www.saltprint.com.au/stationery_diy.php)4. Readable in all sizes Business card, letterhead to giant banners the logo should be compact and readable. Onany media it should not be smaller than 1.5 inches in width. More points on next slide
  10. 10. 5. Should go on any background The colored logo should be visible on light as well as dark backgrounds. If needed give it outer glow , shadow ,outline or background color to stand out from any kind of background.6. Printable It should be in minimum colors (not mor than 3 colors) You can design 4 color logo (CMYK), but it then you have to design that same logo in black & white or one color option too. Because for some print medias CMYK printing can be very expensive. For more details about RGB and CMYK: YouTube link: Presscat.com
