When Lightning Strikes Written By Meg Cabot From the 1-800-WHERE-R-YOU Series Fiction Novel Presented By: Lauren Crupnick
Plot

Jess Mastriani was a tough girl. She beat up anyone that gave her a problem. She wound up getting detention for almost the whole year. One day, after school, her friend Ruth came to pick her up from detention. It started hailing and raining horrendously. Jess got struck by lightning and miraculously, she survived. She found a mark on her chest where the lightning entered, but there was no evidence that it ever left her body. The next day, she woke up and was extremely happy that she survived. She felt better than ever, but somehow she knew that something was different.

Jess went to get a glass of milk and saw the “Missing Children” on the carton. The children were, Sean Patrick O’Hanahan and Olivia Marie D’Amato. Jess knew that Sean Patrick O’Hanahan was in Paoli, while Olivia Marie D’Amato was in New Jersey. She called 1-800-WHERE-R-YOU and the children were found. Everyday she knew where two more children were. She was tracked down by the F.B.I. and reporters. Jess was under a lot of pressure to save people. She realized that perhaps some of the people she was “rescuing”, did not want to be saved. Jess had to make the decision of whether or not she wanted to continue to use her special ability to “help” people.

Values

Jess valued her life. When she was struck by lightning, she could have been killed. Shockingly, she survived. If she had passed away, then she wouldn’t have been able to help people.

Jess also valued her family. They gave her so much support throughout the story. Her family helped save Sean by obtaining a lawyer to aid in getting Sean into good hands. Also, they supported her decision to give up her powers. Without her family, she would not have been able to survive the crazy reporters, or the F.B.I’s intense questioning.

Conflicts

Man vs. Self

Jess needed to decide if she should be “helping” people by revealing their locations. She found out that some people were missing for a reason. For example, she discovered that Sean was missing because his mom kidnapped him from his abusive father. If she revealed his location, he would have to go back to his father.

After finding out that some people did not want to be rescued, Jess decided that it was time to say goodbye to her powers. She claimed that her powers “magically disappeared” even though they really didn’t.

How did Jess’s Values help her?

Life

Jess realized how valuable her life was after being struck by lightning. She could have died during this accident. This showed her how important life was. The incident encouraged her to live life to the fullest and gave her the desire to help Sean.

Family

Jess’s family was very important to her. She valued her relationship with them. This made her want to help unite other families. Her family supported her while she had her powers. They helped her escape from the F.B.I. Her family supported her and always backed up her decisions.

Lesson

The theme of the book is, you shouldn’t necessarily do what others tell you. You should do what you think is right. If somebody tells you to do something that you don’t want to do, put a stop to it right away. The longer you wait, the worse the situation can get.

I definitely would recommend this book. It is more of a book for girls though. The book was full of adventures. It was a fast moving book and caught my interest right away. I enjoyed the book because it was suspenseful. In fact, it was difficult to put the book down because I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. It was fun to predict what would happen in the future. I also liked seeing how much Jess changed throughout the story. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I give this book 4 stars.

I hope you enjoyed my book talk!

Thanks for watching!
