Mining Mining Presentation Transcript

  • Mrs. Harris March 25th 2011
  • Today:
    • Effects of mining
    • Conserving Earth’s natural resources
  • Mining- Benefits
    • Our world functions the way it does because of our ability to build and use things made from natural resources.
    • Iron, copper, aluminum, gold, silver, diamonds
    • Coal & oil (not a technical mineral)
  •
  • Mining- Costs
    • There is a limited supply of these minerals on Earth. They are becoming harder to find.
    • We dig deeper and faster into Earth’s crust to extract these minerals that we want.
  • Example: Coal
    • How long does it take to form?

  • Impacts of Mining
    • Surface mines
      • Removes layers of soil and rock
      • Super-mineralized water run off is toxic
    • Chile’s Gold Mine  click to watch
    • Effects of coal mining in West Virginia  click to watch
    • Subsurface mines
      • Can cause sinkholes and cave-ins
  • How to minimize impact:
    • Federal Laws to reduce pollution and habitat destruction
    • Reclamation
      • Returning the land to it’s original state after use.
  • When were they made?: (take a guess)
      • I’m sure we’ve been protecting our waterways and drinking water and cleaning up our messes for a long time, right?
      • Clean Water Act
      • Safe Drinking Water Act
      • CERCLA Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act
  • When were they made:

  • Being smart with what we have
    • Recycling and conserving
      • Recycling
        • Requires less energy than mining and processing
        • Metals and glass can be efficiently recycled

      • Conserving
        • Preservation and wise use of resources
