Similes and metaphors describe something by comparing it to something else. <br />
Similes always use like or as.<br />Metaphors say that something is something else.  <br />
For example…<br />
Let’s compare these windows to Jolly Ranchers. <br />Yes, that is me.<br />
Are the windows actually Jolly Ranchers? No. <br />
If they were, we would not be comparing two different things. <br />
A simile: <br />The windows are like Jolly Ranchers. <br />
A metaphor: <br />The windows are Jolly Ranchers. <br />
Another simile: <br />The windows are as colorful as Jolly Ranchers. <br />
We could compare the windows to other things too. <br />
The windows are like colored tissue paper.<br />(Simile) <br />
The windows are made of rainbows.<br />(Metaphor) <br />
Using metaphors and similes makes our writing more vivid.<br />Who wants to settle for saying that the windows are colorfu...
