  • 2.  Chery Automobile is an investment company which is owned by the Chinese government. The company manufactures automobiles to sell inside China, but does export them to other countries. The cars made by this company cross over several automotive classifications.
  • 3.  They make family sedans, city cars and economy vehicles. Chery is planning on expanding the types of vehicles that are manufactured as well as the countries to which they sell the vehicles. Currently, the company does not sell their vehicles in North America, but they have several models that are sold around the globe.
  • 4.  The company began in 1997 as an effort to help the Wuhu region of China improve its economic conditions. The provincial government funded and helped set up the automaker through investments. However, because of the poor structure of the company and the economic climate of China, they were not able to market the vehicles across the country as a whole.
  • 5.  Even though this made it very difficult for the automaker, they were able to land one key contract with a taxi company which helped to sustain them until a larger company, Shanghai Automotive Industry Company, invested in Chery. They invested monetarily and brought the small car makers under the company’s seller’s license.
  • 6.  Chery was then able to set up their own research and development facility. This allowed them the opportunity to develop their own little 3 and 4 cylinder engines to use in the vehicles that were marketed only in their local area. The release of their first vehicles landed them in court with the huge American auto maker General Motors who sued the small Chinese company.
  • 7.  GM stated that several of the vehicles were exact copies of the GM line of Daewoo. GM dropped the case and the small car manufacturer agreed to not market specific automobiles in Europe or North America.
  • 8.  The company sent its first automobile exports to Syria in 2001 making them the first Chinese company to produce a domestic vehicle and export it. The manufacturer has progressed to being able to set up a plant in Iran and have exports going to 29 other countries.
  • 9.  They have contracted with some key companies to help with the design and style of their vehicles. They have contracts with Lotus Engineering, Bosch and the famous designer Bertone and Pinninfarina. Their efforts to market in the US and Europe have not been successful although they have shown their Chery sedan in various international markets.
