This is a pupil presentation called the S1 Citizenship Challenge. 2010 the theme was Latin America. Pupils of S1 Hamilton Grammar were assigned a country to research and present back. The class winners progress to the Year Group Final. This was exemplified as good practice for Curriculum for Excellence when it was S1 African Adventure.

  • 3. <ul><li>1516: Explorer Juan Diaz de Solis discovers Rio de la Plata. Spain later claims it and the surrounding region. </li></ul><ul><li>1776: Spain creates a large colony called the Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata. It covers present-day Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and southern Bolivia. Buenos Aires is named its capital. </li></ul><ul><li>1810: On May 25, armed citizens of Buenos Aires kick out the Spanish Viceroy and establish a government. </li></ul><ul><li>1816-1817: Argentina declares its independence from Spain. José de San Martín defeats Spanish forces in Chile. </li></ul><ul><li>1880s: Argentina becomes a major exporter of wool, wheat and beef. Soon, it becomes the richest nation in Latin America. </li></ul><ul><li>1943: A group of military officers seizes power. </li></ul><ul><li>1946: Colonel Juan Perón is elected president. He promises higher wages and better working conditions. His wife, Eva &amp;quot;Evita&amp;quot; Perón, is in charge of labor relations. She becomes a powerful political figure. </li></ul><ul><li>1982: Argentina goes to war with Britain over control of the Falkland Islands. Argentina’s military government collapses, ending a period of repression. </li></ul><ul><li>1991: The government makes the peso equal to the value of the U.S. dollar. This helps to stabilize the Argentine economy. </li></ul><ul><li>2001: Thousands protest soaring unemployment and increased poverty. On December 20, President Fernando de la Rua resigns. Congress names a new president, Eduardo Duhalde </li></ul>History

  • 5. Like Australians, Argentineans like eating beef and drinking wine. The most popular way to eat beef is the &amp;quot;asado&amp;quot; (barbecued beef ribs), whereas whole sides of beef or kid may be spit roasted for large gatherings. Also popular are &amp;quot;empanadas&amp;quot; which are crescent-shaped pies usually filled with meat or corn, and &amp;quot;Locro,&amp;quot; a type of stew made with corn, beans, potatoes and peppers. The national drink is &amp;quot;mate&amp;quot; (pronounced mat-A), a green tea made from the leaves of “yerba mate”, a national herb. City people dress in garments similar to those worn by Australians. Rural workers may wear the traditional gaucho clothing: a wide brimmed hat, a poncho, and a loose pair of trousers tucked into boots. There are over 37 million people in Argentina but that figure is changing every day ! People
  • 6. Charity Projects <ul><li>One of the biggest charity projects in Argentina is SOS Children’s Villages. </li></ul><ul><li>It helps children in poverty and is also the largest orphan company in the world !!! </li></ul>
  • 7. Wildlife In the far north close to Bolivia, two interesting plants can be found: quenoa can be found in the valleys, and llareta in the high altitude puna above the tree line. The Andean Condor is the largest carrion eating bird in the World. It is found throughout the country. Birds of prey are common in the mountains: buzzards, eagles, hawks and kestrels. They prey on rodents, vizcachas (like a cross between a rabbit and a squirrel) and chinchillas. Vicuñas are South American came lids, superbly adapted to the high altitude with their fine but warm fur, their domesticated cousins alpacas are herded by the Indians This is a Vizcacha !! We think it looks like a rabbit with a squirrels tail Cousins !!!

  • 10. <ul><li>Lionel Andres Messi was born on 24th of June 1987 in a place called Rosario which is in Argentina. He has 2 older brothers called Rodrigo and Matias and a sister called Maria. </li></ul><ul><li>When he was five he started playing with a football team called Grandoli which was coached by his dad. </li></ul>Lionel Messi !

  • 12. Interesting Facts ! The second largest country in South America and the eighth largest country of the world, European explorers stepped into Argentina in the year 1516. The popular dance form ‘Tango’ belongs to Argentina. The name &amp;quot;Argentina&amp;quot; comes from the Latin term &amp;quot;silver&amp;quot;. Argentina is 3 hours behind our time ! Argentina is the third largest beef producer in the world. 30% of Argentina&apos;s population lives in Buenos Aires. Argentine women undergo the most number of plastic surgeries in the world, per capita. Over 30% of its women suffer from some form of an eating disorder. It is the 5th largest wine producer in the world. It has one of the highest movie watching rates in the world!

Weddings <ul><li>Argentinean weddings are always every special because of the countries beauty. </li></ul><ul><li>In Argentina it’s a must that you wear something blue usually underneath the bride’s dress she would wear a blue petticoat. </li></ul><ul><li>In Argentina they don’t have a best man or bridesmaids. They also wear their wedding rings on their right hand but after the wedding they exchange it to the left. </li></ul>

  • 15. <ul><li>Argentina is a country of South America stretching about 3701 kms from Bolivia to the southern tip of Tierra del Fuego, an island it shares with Chile. European conquests in early 1500s, and in 1776 Spain established a viceroyalty that included present-day countries Argentina, Chilean Patagonia, Uruguay, Bolivia and parts of Brazil. Following the British invasions of Buenos Aires of 1806 and 1807, which became a catalyst for the Revolution of 25th May 1810 and the Declaration of Independence from Spain in 9th July 1816. Buenos Aires is the capital city and the largest city in Argentina. </li></ul>Houses , Poor + Rich ,

Most Argentines are people who have migrated from the middle and upper middle classes, although there are a large number of poor Argentines who have migrated to neighboring countries. The most popular immigration destinations in America are: USA , Chile , Paraguay , Brazil , Uruguay , Bolivia and Canada , but other communities&apos; stationed in Venezuela , Mexico , Peru , Colombia , Ecuador and Costa Rica . In Europe, Spain and Italy have large communities but also in the United Kingdom , France and Germany . There are also significant communities in Israel and Australia . According to official estimates there are 600,000 worldwide Argentine, according to estimates by the International Organization for Migration are about 806,369 since 2001. It is estimated that their descendants would be around 1,900,000.
