    Sorry about the read ability of some of the slides. In PPT 2007 it is possible to change the transparency levels of the background pictures, when I convert it to PPT XP it darkens them again.



    There is a transcript somewhere on the page if you really need to read what I wrote.

    Such a classicale teaching leading to independent thinking abilities has become rare - most of the world today goes with casual ( cause effect) ways. people want to lie more, ithink, rather than better.

What is an Acceptable Thesis - Presentation Transcript

  1. Aim : What is an acceptable thesis? Do Now: In 3-5 minutes, from memory, recreate one of the generic rubrics for essays.
  2. Who cares about a thesis?
    • Everyone does! There is nothing more frustrating then listening to someone go on forever about nothing.
    • A thesis will set the tone for your essay and will dictate the score you receive on your paper.
  3. What is a thesis?
    • an unproved statement put forward as a premise in an argument
    • dissertation: a treatise advancing a new point of view resulting from research; usually a requirement for an advanced academic degree
    • A statement supported by arguments
  4. What is an acceptable thesis?
    • An acceptable thesis is going to be a statement that answers a question an is supported by facts or reasons.
  5. B A R = The format for every thesis statement in class
    • B = background = general information about the subject or the time
    • A = argument = a restatement of the question
    • R = road map = the three (or more) main points of your argument which can be supported by details.
  6. Let’s look at a couple ACCEPTABLE thesis statements
    • Analyze the attitudes of the Han and Romans towards technology.
    • T1) Around the dawn of the First Millennium the Han and Roman attitudes toward technology were both self glorifying, however, the Han empire in China placed more value upon technology and technological advancements then did the Roman Empire , as evidenced by the constant concern on the part of the Han dynasty over the occasional indifference on the part of the Romans.
  7. Let’s look at a couple ACCEPTABLE thesis statements
    • 2) Analyze the attitudes of the Han and Romans towards technology.
    • T2) The Han and Roman Empires are separated by hundreds of years and thousands of miles. Even across this distance both the Han and Roman societies had a clear appreciation for technological advancements. Even through both societies appreciated technological advancements, the difference between these societies is in which areas he technical attention was focused.
  8. Let’s look at a couple ACCEPTABLE thesis statements
    • 3) Analyze the attitudes of the Han and Romans towards technology.
    • T3) The legacy of the Han Chinese and Romans live on even to this day . Their legacy exists because of their favorable attitude towards technology. Overall, the attitudes toward technology were favorable, however, there were times when technology was cast aside for more pressing matters and the technology which received the most attention from each society were different because of issues facing the people at that time.
  9. Your turn to write an acceptable thesis statement (5-10 minutes)
    • 1) The question: Write an essay exploring the reasons gum chewing should be allowed in school.
    • 2) Remember BAR
    • - Give background about chewing gum (1 sentence).
    • - Restate the question (1 sentence)
    • - Give three categories for why gum chewing is good in school (1-2 sentences)
  10. My thesis statement
    • 4) Write an essay exploring the reasons gum chewing should be allowed in school.
    • T4) Gum chewing has been an activity New Yorkers have participated in for over 100 hundred years, mostly children under the age of 18. Gum chewing has become such a part of life for New Yorkers it should be allowed in schools. Gum chewing can be calming, assist in brain function, and make studnets more comfortable in discussions.
  11. Homework
    • Read your notes from today’s class.
    • Write a summary of the entire days notes in 20 words or less.
      • Example: Today’s notes are about _________, this is important because __________.
  12. Aim : What is an acceptable thesis? Part II Do Now: In 5 minutes, in your notebook write down the thesis statements on the board.
  13. Your thesis statements
    • Let’s review some of the thesis statements by your classmates and see if they meet BAR.
    • If they do not, let’s think of ways to fix them!!
  14. Thesis practice
    • 1) The question: Write an essay explaining which game system is better the Wii or the PS3.
    • 2) Remember BAR
    • - Give background about the game systems (1 sentence).
    • - Restate the question (1 sentence)
    • - Give three categories for analysis of the game systems (1-2 sentences)
  15. Homework
    • 1) Read the Generic Rubric for the DBQ.
    • 2) Read the Sample Question and the 8 documents.
    • Be prepared to work with these next week!!
