    1. Aim : How to get a 9 on the Document-Based Question (DBQ) Do NOW: In the first 2 minutes of class, take out the Sample Question and 8 documents .
    2. What do I need to know about history?
      • Really? Nothing!
      • You do not need to know much history at all to do well on this part of the exam.
      • The more you know the better your essay will be, but it is still possible to get a 9 without knowing much at all.
    3. Information for the essay
      • ALL the information you need to write the essay is contained in the documents.
      • It is your job to organize, interpret and analyze these documents.
      • Writing the DBQ (Document-Based Question) is a skill and like all other skills, it can be learned.
    4. Something to remember about skills…..
      • PRACTICE MAKES PERMANENT
      • PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERMANENTLY PERFECT
    5. First 10 minutes…
      • Everyone should take the first 10 minutes to read the question, read the documents and start some analysis.
      • This 10 minutes is your preparation time.
    6. First 10 minutes…Understanding the question
      • First, read the question (prompt). Underline the words that are most related to your task.
      • In the modern world, major political and social changes have been brought about by different means: national liberation, revolution, reformism, and parliamentary action. Using the documents presented below, discuss the various methods of political and social transformation that they call for or advocate. Be sure to explain the need for at least one additional type of document.
    7. First 10 minutes…Understanding the question
      • What did you underline?
      • I underlined:
        • Political and social change
        • Modern world
        • National liberation
        • Revolution
        • Reformism
        • Parliamentary action
      • These key words will be a unifying link throughout the essay.
      • The other document part is important, just not yet…

      • You are being asked to:
      • write about how national liberation, revolution, reformation and parliamentary action changed the politics and the lives of people.
      • Do you know this information of hand? NO. But the answers to this question are in the documents.

      • Use the margins to write notes, underline key phrases and begin to organize your documents in to categories/groups.
    11. First 10 minutes…re-read the question
    12. But I’m slow…
      • Welcome to pressure!
      • There is no time to be slow but if you go a couple of minutes over the 10 minutes, its alright.
      • Just make sure you’re not going more than 15 or 16 minutes because you will be taking time from the other essays.
    13. Homework
      • Read over your notes on the DBQ and how to write a thesis.
      • Read the prompt and documents one more time.
      • Write an acceptable thesis on this prompt, be prepared to share tomorrow.
