Background of the Olympics <ul><li>The Olympic Games are a worldwide event celebrated in the summer and winter every 4 years, where many athletes compete in their respective sport and for their country </li></ul><ul><li>Each Olympics is held in a different country </li></ul><ul><li>The first Olympics took place in 776 B.C. </li></ul><ul><li>The ancient Olympics were held mainly as a religious festival for the God, Zeus </li></ul>

  4. 4. <ul><li>The Games of the XXVII Olympiad were held in Sydney Australia </li></ul><ul><li>The USA took home the most medals (92: 37 gold 24 silver and 31 bronze) followed by Russia and then China. </li></ul><ul><li>Host country Australia collected 58 medals, putting them in 4 th place </li></ul>

  17. 17. The team of Yolanda Griffith, Lisa Leslie, Ruth Riley, Swin Cash, Tamika Catching, Sheryl Swoopes, Tina Thompson, Sue Bird, Shannon Johnson, Katie Smith, Dawn Staley, and Diana Taurasi defeated Australia 74-63 to take home the gold medal

  20. 21. <ul><li>The Games of the XX Olympic Winter Games were held in Torino, Italy </li></ul><ul><li>Germany took home 29 medals, putting them in first place </li></ul><ul><li>The USA followed with 25 medals and Austria, in third, with 23. </li></ul>

  24. 25. <ul><li>With the summer Olympics approaching fast, many have different opinions. </li></ul><ul><li>Some human rights activists are planning on protesting the games because of China’s involvement in Darfur </li></ul><ul><li>It is also being predicted that terrorists are a real threat for the 2008 Beijing Olympics </li></ul><ul><li>There are also concerns about the pollution, but officials hope to have this problem solved before the Olympics </li></ul>Controversy over the 2008 Summer Olympics
