History of Plastic Surgery Began more than 4,000 years ago. In the late 19th century, the American medical community accepted reconstructive surgery. This was the beginning of plastic surgery in the United States. First major American surgeon to perform plastic surgery was Dr. John Peter Mettauer. He performed the first cleft palate operation in North America’s history of plastic surgery. The surgery took place in 1827 with instruments Dr. Mettauer designed himself.
