  3. 3. Background <ul><li>American Rivers is a political interest group dedicated to protecting, preserving and educating the community about America’s rivers </li></ul>

Background <ul><li>American Rivers was founded in 1973 </li></ul><ul><li>Funded by donations and it’s 65,000 members throughout the nation, American rivers has offices in all regions of the country </li></ul><ul><li>Most of the leadership is based on a regional level, with paying jobs and internships available </li></ul>
  5. 5. Campaigns <ul><li>The main focuses of American Rivers is divided into four major campaigns </li></ul>
  6. 6. Healthy Waters <ul><li>American Rivers is dedicated to not only river clean-up, but education of public officials, developers, community leaders, and citizens </li></ul>
  7. 7. Healthy Waters <ul><li>The Healthy Water campaign includes projects such as providing citizens tips on water as well as pushing for legislation to improve water quality </li></ul>
  8. 8. Water For Life <ul><li>The Water For Life is dedicated to researching and working with science to push for the advancement of a sustainable and renewable use of rivers in the future </li></ul>
  9. 9. Water For Life <ul><li>Examples of this campaigns projects include working with the EPA on a program to push for better water efficiency standards and irrigation systems </li></ul>
  10. 10. River Renewal <ul><li>This campaign deals with the restoration of disrupted rivers to their natural state </li></ul>
  11. 11. River Renewal <ul><li>Examples of some of this campaigns projects include providing funding and resources to remove worn out dams and to replace natural floodplains and wetlands </li></ul>
  12. 12. River Heritage <ul><li>This campaign is dedicating to develop an appreciation for America’s rivers as recreation, resources, and scenery </li></ul>
  13. 13. River Heritage <ul><li>An example of the work of this campaign includes the “Blue Trails Program”, dedicated to reuniting people and their local rivers through access </li></ul>

Politically? <ul><li>American Rivers as an organization does not follow any direct line politically, however it pushes for anything and everything that will help their cause: defending and preserving America’s rivers </li></ul><ul><li>Their political activity is limited to supporting and lobbying for any candidate or bill that helps any of their causes or will fund projects </li></ul>
  15. 15. How can you become involved? <ul><li>American Rivers sponsors/ participates in numerous community based projects throughout the year </li></ul><ul><li>Examples include National River Clean-Up day, as well as numerous lobbying projects for the protection of rivers </li></ul>
  16. 16. How to Become Involved <ul><li>To become involved in this organization one can become a member, donate or simply volunteer to help with one of the group’s many community level program </li></ul>
  17. 17. American Rivers <ul><li>Basically, by joining and supporting this group you would be advocating for something you cannot live without- water. With the help of this group, America is refocusing towards the true value of its waterways as resources, scenery and recreation </li></ul>
  18. 18. Conclusion <ul><li>American Rivers is an independent political interest group dedicating to supporting and preserving one of America’s most important components; its river ways. </li></ul>
