    Moving Trends in the U.S.

 How many people move each year?

         Usually about 12% of the American population moves each year
              Approximately 11.6% of the American population between 2010 and
               2011, which was low compared to other years
              In 2012, there has been an increase in number of moves. US existing
               home sales showed an increase of 10% between April 2011 and April
               2012, showing the relative optimism in the market

         Nearly 59% of Americans live in their respective birth states

         About 14.8% of moves in 2010 were out-of-state
         In 2009:
              8.3% of residents of the Northeast moved
              11.8% of residents of the Midwest moved
              13.6% of residents of the South moved
              14.7% of residents of the West moved

     Where do Americans move?
         Most common state-to-state moves:
              California to Texas (68,959 movers)
              New York to Florida (55,011)
              Florida to Georgia (49,901)
              California to Arizona (47,164)
              New Jersey to Pennsylvania (42,456)
              New York to New Jersey (41,374)
              California to Washington (39,468)
              Texas to California (36,582)
              Georgia to Florida (35,615)
              California to Nevada (35,472)

     Why do they move?

         For short distances (less than 50 miles away): 40% moved for
          housing reasons

         For long distances (500 miles or more): 43.9% moved for
          employment-related reasons

         Generally, between 2009 and 2010:
              43% moved for housing reasons
              30.3% moved for family (i.e. marriage or divorce)
              16.4% moved for job issues

     How do they move?

         In 2010 the average full-service, professional move cost
          $12,230

         Number of shipments transported by moving companies
          increased by 1.5% in the first half of 2012
              This came after a 1% gain in 2011 and 15% drop in 2009

         Slightly less than half of people move residences during the
          summer
              June is the most popular month to move
