  3. 3. Reducing and/or eliminating hazardsthroughout your home, neighbourhood,workplace and school can greatly reduceyour risk of injury or death following thenext earthquake or other disaster. Conduct a "hazard hunt" to help identifyand fix things such as unsecured ,televisions, Computers, book cases,furniture, unstrapped water heaters, etc. Securing these items now will help toprotect you tomorrow.

  5. 5. Planning for an earthquake, terrorist attack,or other emergency is not much different fromplanning for a party or vacation.Make sure that your emergency planincludes evacuation and reunion plans; yourout-of-state contact persons name andnumber; the location of your emergencysupplies and other pertinent information.By planning now, you will be ready for thenext emergency.
  6. 6. Step 3:Make Disaster Kits
  7. 7. Everyone should have disaster supplies kits stored inaccessible locations at home, at work and in yourvehicle.Having emergency supplies readily available canreduce the impact of an earthquake, a terrorist incidentor other emergency on you and your family. Your disaster supplies kits should include food, water,flashlights, portable radios, batteries, a first aid kit, cash,extra medications, a whistle, fire extinguisher, etc.

  9. 9. Most houses are not as safe as they could be. Whether you are a homeowner or a renter, there arethings that you can do to improve the structural integrityof your home.Some of the things that you might consider checkinginclude inadequate foundations, un braced cripple wallssoft first storey, un reinforced masonry and vulnerablepipes.Consult an engineer to help you identify your buildingsweaknesses and begin to fix them now.

  12. 12. • Learn what to do during an earthquake,whether youre at home, at work, at school or justout and about.• Taking the proper actions, such as "Drop, Cover,and Hold On", can save lives and reduce yourrisk of death or injury.• During earthquakes, drop to the floor, take coverunder a sturdy desk or table, and hold on to itfirmly. Be prepared to move with it until theshaking stops .

One of the first things you should do following amajor disaster isTo check for injuries and damages that needimmediate attention. Make sure you are trained in first aid and indamage assessment techniques.You should be able to administer first aid andTo identify hazards such as damaged domesticgas connections, water, sewage and electricallines..

  17. 17. Following a major disaster, communication will bean important step in your recovery efforts.Turn on your portable radio for information andsafety advisories. If your home is damaged, contact yourinsurance agent right away to begin your claimsprocess.
