  • 3. Bookin’ on Bikes began as a dream of two overzealous newbies to the biking community. We wanted to…
    • Give students an opportunity to be physically active & have fun outside
    • Give students a break in their daily routines
    • Increase student reading skills
    • Teach students about health & wellness
    • Model a healthy lifestyle
    • Challenge students physically & academically
    • Offer students opportunities to earn elective credit
    • Engage our students in community events
    • Share our love of reading & cycling with our students
  • 4. In October 2008 The Michael Jordan Foundation supported our dream.
  • 5. MJF provided funding for:
    • 16 bicycles
    • Helmets, seat bags, water bottles
    • Extra tubes, pumps, patch kits
    • Safety, Etiquette & Maintenance Workshops
    • T-shirts
    • Books & magazine subscriptions
  • 6. We picked up our bikes in October 2008
  • 7.  
  • 8. We spent the winter months preparing
    • Bicycle education workshops
    • Guest speakers
    • Games, articles, and movies to generate excitement about cycling
    • Incentive program set up to encourage student participation
  • 9. Our first ride was on April 7,‘09.
    • we rode 3 miles
  • 10. “ The best rides are the ones where you bite off much more than you can chew – and live through it.” – Doug Bradbury
  • 11. One month later, on May 19 th , we rode 17 miles!
  • 12. Summer 2009 Longer rides, fun in the sun, and ALWAYS include lunch
  • 13. Community Service Projects New Challenges Canoeing in Warren County Preparing a meal for a homeless shelter
  • 14. Volunteering & riding in the community
    • East Coast Night Pajama Party!!
  • 15. Bookin’ on Bikes by the numbers:
    • 30 students served
    • 12 months in progress
    • 6 staff have participated
    • 250+ miles
    • 10 metro trails
    • 11 credits earned
    • 3 graduates
