  • What is a “smart bus”??
    • It is a visionary idea for enhancing city, intercity and tourist buses
    • Nota only a transport medium, but “what the passenger wishes”:
      • A way to keep working
      • An information medium
      • A way to continue to monitor patients
      • An on-board entertainment place
      • A mobile monitoring/surveillance system for the outside environment ( pollution, traffic, etc … )
      • A mobile router for neighbouring outside users
      • And so on …

  • Services
    • GENERIC for passengers:
      • Tourist information on the road
      • Meteo info and air pollution
      • Advertisement news
    • CUSTOMISED for passengers:
      • Get the info requested by on board passengers
      • Keep connection: medical monitoring, Internet access
    • MANAGEMENT:
      • Driver medical monitoring
      • Bus status monitoring
      • Environment monitoring (security, pollution, traffic)‏

  • Characteristics
    • Novel idea; existing projects are mostly orientated towards fleet management
    • Most advantageous for long trips, such as intercity or tourism
    • It reduces:
      • the usage of cars
      • the driver's stress
      • the environment pollution (less cars..)
    • It can cooperate with trains that offer enhanced services (both reduce the car usage)
    • Each bus is connected through a hub, either via terrestrial or satellite wireless link for getting the requested info

  • Architectural Scenario
  • Exporting the idea from bus to train
    • Same idea for different public transport services
    • Most advantages:
      • monitoring of structures (galleries, bridges, railways,…)
      • car usage and stress reduction
      • on board services on request
    • Problems (also common to long-trip buses):
      • satellite connection with the hub is quite mandatory
      • long periods of signal outage due to galleries
