  • Thanks for the introduction. Technology is already affecting every aspect of your life. Consider the difference in how you receive information today versus just 5 years ago. You probably discovered this event via twitter, or you received an email announcement to you smartphone. You probably have a couple blogs that you check every day for interesting articles – you might even use an RSS reader to follow your favorites. In similar ways, broader tech trends are changing the ways that people are hosting events. A lot of people think that technology is disconnecting us – they have an image of someone heads down, scrolling through Facebook at the dinner table, and ignoring real life human contact. But today, we’re going to talk about how technology can be used to bring us together at events. And first, we’re going to talk about broader tech trends that you can take advantage of that will help you be more successful in bringing people together. Mobile: When your primary connected device was a desktop computer with a keyboard, technologies were invented to cater to this set-up. No applications used GPS, because your computer was always in the same place. Applications could be text heavy because there were massive screens. And with a keyboard, text input was easy. With mobile, this all changes. Now everyone is walking around with a smartphone and apps are becoming more powerful. We’ll discuss how to take advantage. Hardware Improvements: Hardware used to be very expensive. Now general consumer hardware is replacing specialized business hardware. Have you seen an iPad replace a cash register at your local coffee shop yet? As consumer hardware becomes more powerful, you’ll see it replace specialized enterprise hardware in many more ways. Connected Platforms and APIs: In short APIs are ways for independent websites to interact with each other. -- Define APIA great example is Facebook – when you go to a separate webpage and click a Facebook ‘Like’ button – the way that action is communicated to your Facebook newsfeed is through an API. 5 years ago, only a few services had APIs – but now, almost every service offers an API .. Which increases the chances that web services that you’re already using are integrated with each other and providing a more seamless experience.
  • In 2007, Apple launched the first iPhone. Previous to this, smartphones were just for the super serious business individual. If you worked on Wall Street or in Hollywood, you had a blackberry … but most of America was content with the feature phone. Apple changed all this. As of December 2012, 54% of all phones were smartphones --
