    • In 1887 Ambrose Bierce suggested ways to alter punctuation to represent tone.
    • 7. In 1979 Kevin MacKenzie proposed using punctuation to express gesture and facial expressions.
    • 8. In 1982 Scott Fahlman invented the common sideways smiley face we use today.

    • Use in informal communication (not when you need to be taken seriously).
    • 11. Count how many times you use emoticons, try to keep it to one per correspondence.
    • 12. Remember your age – too much usage may give the impression of immaturity.
    • 13. Remember that teens and preteens use emoticons excessively.
    • 14. Keep emoticons simple.
    • 15. Never let them replace your words. Remember to let your words do most of the talking.
