This case study showcases Mistral’s expertise inproviding customization services on its developmentplatform with a quick turn-around time.The CustomerThe RequirementSolution ProvidedThe customer is one of the leading companies for Electronic Labelingsolutions.The customer approached Mistral to develop an Access Point Hardware forone of their electronic labeling solutions. The software would be built by thecustomer’s team and the same would be integrated into the hardwaresolution developed by Mistral. The customer also wanted Mistral to buildthe diagnostic software and help them with production of the access point.The followingweretheirkeyrequirements:Mistral designed and delivered the hardware and provided productqualification support. Mistral also customized the Linux BSP fordevelopmentofquickandeffectiveproductiontestsoftware.The following key items were addressed by Mistral’s team during the designphasethathelpedindeliveringaneffectivesolutiontothecustomer:Since the processor supported dual voltages, the IO voltage wasreducedto1.8Vwhereverpossible(Craneboardwasdesignedtoworkat3.3V) to meet EMI/EMC requirements. This included changing major IC’slike NAND flash and introducing level translator for MMC/SD cardinterfaceThe two-chip DDR2 memory solution in the Craneboard was replacedbyasinglechipLPDDRtoreduceEMI.Ashieldoptionwasalsoprovided:::::Providing a cost optimized hardware solution that involved customizingMistral’sCraneboardasanaccesspointfortheelectronictagThe hardware solution developed by Mistral should work seamlesslywiththesoftwarethatwouldbedevelopedbythecustomerEnsure that the design is compliant to CISPR and FCC class Bconducted / radiated emissions / susceptibility and ESD standards.IntroductionMistral’s Craneboard is a low-cost, open-source hardware developmentplatform that enables customers to develop general purpose computing andother applications based on the AM3517 Sitara™ ARM® Cortex™-A8microprocessor. Named among EDN Hot 100 products of 2011, theCraneboard provides robust processor performance while deliveringintegratedperipheralsnotfoundonexistinglow-costdevelopmentboards.Mistral was approached by a leading player in the area of Electronic ShelfLabel (ESL) solutions to customize the Craneboard as an access point for theelectronic tag.   2. 2. ::::UnnecessaryinterfaceswereremovedtofacilitatecostreductionMistral developed an engineering diagnostic and production diagnosticsoftware.Thediagnosticssoftwaretestsalltheperipheralsindetailandidentifies issues, if any, in order to make further debugging of theproblem much easier. The production diagnostics software focuses on aquick pass/fail test of all peripherals keeping in mind the fastest turnaroundtimerequiredattheproductionfacility.Mistral’s team had to adhere to a challenging time schedule which wasone of the key requirements of the project. The proto design wasvalidated within two months and the final design was ready forproduction in four months. The second phase of the project involvedmassproductionof boardsoveraperiodoffivemonthsWith a rigid time schedule it was critical to get the design right in thefirst spin. This gave very little room for any errors.
