    PHS Why do GCSE Geography? - Presentation Transcript

    1. What jobs do you need Geography for? Brainstorm as many as you can in the back of your book
    2. Geography involves more than memorizing countries and capitals. It’s a unique way of looking at the world and solving problems. And for some people, it provides a way to earn a living… People working in jobs related to geography study how the elements of a place relate to each other. Some workers respond to crises, such as wildfires.They might, for example, create topographical maps of a flood zone to show where people or animals live or how the coastline has changed over time. Other workers might analyze how a proposed road would affect the people, businesses, and natural features around it. “ Understanding geography can help governments and businesses make better decisions,” says Michael Phoenix
    3. What jobs can you do with Geography?
    4. In your pairs brainstorm how geography is important to your job. Think of at least 3 ways. Prepare a quick presentation for the class. In this presentation you should explain what your job is and outline why geography is important for it. Also think of one other subject which will be important for your job .
    5. What useful skills do we learn in geography? Even if we do not get a job directly linked to Geography there are many skills we have learnt that can help us in most other jobs Presentation - oral, essays and reporting Research - for projects, presentations, interviews and questionnaires Team work - group projects and tutorials Communication/social - from teamwork and inter personal interactions Organisation - Time planning, deadlines for essays & projects, disciplining yourself to work IT - Statistical, GIS, Word processing Practical - surveying, questionnaires, fieldwork Analytical/Problem solving - lab work, data crunching Numeracy - statistics, equations, graphs Specific topic knowledge Creativity/decision making e.g. through choosing projects and essay topics Video Click to view

The study of GCSE Geography can help you to: gain a knowledge of your world and an understanding of current events, appreciate different cultures in this country and in other parts of the world, become aware of physical (natural) and human environments and develop a range of useful skills. These include map reading, graph/diagram drawing and interpretation, problem solving, data collection, decision-making, and role-play. The use of ICT is also encouraged and developed.
    7. Design an advert to go into the year 9 options booklet explaining why people should consider taking GCSE Geography
