  1. Cyclone One Bravo May 1997 Laura Fisher
    • The serve tropical cyclone known as One Bravo gathered intensity in the bay of Bengal , and struck the south eastern coast of Bangladesh on, Monday the 19 th may 1997
  2. Fact File.
    • ● 1 Million people had no fresh water. ●Many Out Breaks of Diarrhoea. ●111 Deaths ●Very Few people had insurance ●500,00 people left homeless ●Vital Cash crops and Cattle lost. ●Storm cut communication lines with islands along the coast, making it difficult to receive damage and casualty reports. ●2 Meter high tidal surges covered the low lying island in the bay of Bengal destroying crops.
  3. Relief
    • Natural aid: The Prime minister established a relief fund in 1997 , to cover relief and rehabilitation needs. The government decided that so families in each of the affected areas would given 32 kg of rice for over 2 months. The following contributions were announced at the meeting in Dhaka, and were administered through NGO’s working in effected areas. AUSTRAILIA : $77 000 CANADA : $100 000 FRANCE: $ 35 000 SWEEDEN : $ 240 000 UK:$160 00 USA:$640 000
  4. Protection Schemes
    • Earth Embankments have been, constructed and are continually being strengthened but are often not high or strong enough.
    • Cyclone shelters, many made of concrete and constructed above flood water levels, have been built in most frequently effected areas.
    • Education programmes have been implemented so that inhabitants know what to do if there was a storm alerts.
