  9. 9. Scottish people have been emigrating for hundreds of years
  10. 10. There were the most Scottish immigrants in 1901 when there were 47,858 immigrants, there were the least in 1858 when there were only 7,976 immigrants who had become New Zealand citizens. </li></ul>

  12. 12. Up to half of the immigrants were for laborers and agricultural farmers
  13. 13. Some of the Scottish immigrants escaping a difficult past
  14. 14. Close to 70% of them came from Edinburgh and Glasgow </li></ul><ul><li>The Scottish came in hope of securing land
  15. 15. They came to escape the fall of cattle price from 1848-1852
  16. 16. Some came to escape the potato famine of 1846
  17. 17. From 1840-1852 few Scottish came to New Zealand as refugees
  18. 18. They came for a variety of reasons </li></ul>
  19. 19. How and when the Scottish immigrated to New Zealand <ul><li>There were two groups of Scottish people who came to New Zealand in the early 1840's
  20. 20. Blenheim arrived in December close to 200 passengers, many of these Scots settled little north of Wellington a Kaiwharawhara, became known as the scotch settlement
  21. 21. Two ships sent by the New Zealand company sent to Wellington carried Scots </li></ul><ul><li>About 120 Scots sailed on the Bengal Merchant arrive in port Nicholson February 1840
  22. 22. Several move north to Canterbury </li></ul>
  23. 23. My Conclusion For Scottish Immigration To New Zealand <ul><li>Scotland been important to NZ has had major impact
  24. 24. Came in early times and had major influence on NZ (us)
  25. 25. Without it would Nz be very different
  26. 26. NZ got lots places named after it, could find quite few places in NZ and places same name in Scotland </li></ul>
