    • Local & Global audiencesTopic 1 Topic 2 Topic 3Main Topic Hollywood conglomerates still dominate filmindustry and have loads of money & powerto get to mass audiencesIn contrast, indie film industry is for nicheaudiences ( perhaps more local) but competewith conglomeratesChanging and evolving industriesThings to discuss -appeal to mass & global audiences for highprofits as they are horizontal and verticallyintegrated (have more control overeverything)-have loads of money (capital) to spend on avariety of things to make it appealing tomass audiences:…..big actors, directors,……huge marketing campaigns (below andabove the line)……spectacular special effects and highaction……often franchise films (stick with audiencesas they grow up)-----synergies with other companiesGlobal audiences =…….shot in different countries (locations)……..website to different parts of world……..DVD in multiple languages……..social media marketing(global)……(connected to synergy/crossmedia convergence)-test screening – do this to know if audiencesunderstand and like the film……..-compete with conglomerates as most (mass)audiences watch mainstream films-often they don’t have capital thatconglomerates have, rely on public funding tofund projects or from private investors-don’t have money for marketing campaigns(have below the line advertising instead such asfilm festivals to create buzz……….this sometimescan get it’s appeal to global audiences (via socialnetworking too!)-can’t make elaborate and spectacular films butoften simplistic/raw nitty gritty portrayals………often these stories and subcultures arespecific to a region which is appealing to localaudiences (ex east london)-growing with expansion of technology (fasterand cheaper to make films with digitaltechnology………easier to exhibit in cinemas whohave digital projection (paid for by digital screennetwork)……..easier to get to audiences(arthouse cinemas such as tricycle , picturehouseor curzon)-of course many filmmakers and productioncompanies dedicated to making indie film toreflect realism and celebrate artisticexpression and freedom (provide alternativefrom mainstream and for niche audiences)--conglomerates have strategies to keep nicheaudiences (buying out indie companies(working title)……or distributing indie films(juno, american pie, paranormal activity)-indie films are starting to act likeconglomerates having big budgets , marketingcampaigns and spectacular CGI/actions etc.(hunger games, life of pi)……..for mass andniche!!!!!! (clever way to make more money!)-indie industries still have loyal audiences whovalue the unique and different (and how like agood simple story)-local and global audiences can consume filmseasier from proliferation of technology andtechnological convergence – at home on DVDor buy on itunes (big or small films), PPV,lovefilm etc.
