  3. 3. Q : What is ODA? ODA Official Development Assistance Money given by donor countries to recipient countries (mostly developing countries) Donor countries can gain security via ODA
  4. 4. Contribution of Japanese ODA in China 1. Specially arranged for China’s open policy since 1980s 2. Focus on infrastructure = For an economic foundation 3. Increase in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and foreign exchange
  5. 5. Benefits of ODA to China for the Japanese government 1.Security 2.Business ties 3.Authority in international society 4.Friendship with China
  6. 6. 1. Security Example: Importing resources --Japan resource poor --Japanese ODA to China develops refineries and other industries for resource production --Japan can import manufactured resources directly from China
  7. 7. 2. Business Ties Example: Between the private sector and government officials --Japanese ODA allows personal contacts between individuals in both sectors --Strong ties between private sector and governments makes government more powerful
