UK Carbon Reduction Strategy - Presentation Transcript

        • HELPING THE UK ACHIEVE ITS 2020 CARBON REDUCTION TARGETS
    1. UK Targets and Opportunities 2010 20% reduction Missed? 2020 26% reduction ?
      • A carbon reduction strategy is needed to change people’s behaviour because:
        • 50% of CO 2 emissions are from households and therefore it is not possible to achieve these national targets without empowering people to reduce their carbon footprints.
        • And scaling renewable energy and new technologies is not feasible in this timeframe.
    2. Positive Futures Conference 2009 "By and large most people are still leading wholly unsustainable lives, with relatively pathetic levels of political leadership heading broadly towards the abyss." "If we haven’t done what we need to by 2020 actually it doesn’t matter what target you set for 2050. It’ll be academic ... So focus on 2020.“ Chair of the Sustainable Development Commission Sir Jonathon Porritt
      • Empowerment Institute – one of the world’s foremost consultancies in behaviour change and large scale community transformation – has demonstrated:
          • 25% reduction in household CO 2 emissions
          • With a proven model for engaging citizens and taking this approach to scale at the community level
      There is a solution
    3. If we can – we must! The goal is to generate the national political and civic will to achieve this solution. A Behaviour Change Solution for the UK
    4. Enable the UK to achieve up to 50% of its carbon reduction goal by 2020. Create a carbon literate society and the demand for a low carbon economy. Provide an economic stimulus of a minimum of £100 per household through energy efficiency savings. Develop the social capital that can be reinvested in more sustainable, livable and resilient communities. And climate change adaptation capacity. Enable the UK to serve as a global role model for short term substantive carbon reduction results. Benefits of a national carbon reduction behavior change initiative:
