  1. 1. Compelling Events for Automation• Middleware Upgrades It’s great when new vendorsbring out new features - but often taking advantage ofthem takes a good deal of time and effort to upgradethe new infrastructure - and introduces risk. Automatingthe upgrade project speeds it up, reduces the risk andbuilds a more manageable platform in the future.• Migrating off ‘Premium Product’ With the economyas it is, more organizations are forced to tighten theirbelts, and one area that has come under particularscrutiny is the annual cost of maintaining installedsoftware. Some organizations have made the decisionto move less business critical applications off moreexpensive middleware onto open-source platformssuch as JBoss and Tomcat. This type of project isaccelerated when it’s automated and an automationtool makes managing hybrid or heterogeneousenvironments much easier.• Building a PAAS or a private cloud With pressureon businesses to deliver more innovation to theircustomers, faster, we see many of our customersbuilding Platforms As A Service and private clouds. These are a lot faster and quicker to set up using anautomation tool, and a lot quicker to manage demandonce they are up and running.• Core business application upgrades or migrationsMany of our customers occasionally need to upgradeor even replace their core business applications - oftencomplex, multi-layered, integrated systems that haveevolved over time and have many integration pointsand are absolutely critical to the minute by minuteoperations of the business. Using an automation toolcan reduce the risk and time associated with sucha project.• Platform migrations Sometimes it’s time to movefrom one platform to another - for instance, customerssometimes feel that a UNIX based platform willoffer them performance advantages over an OS400platform. But moving hundreds of middlewareapplications might seem like a challenge too far -without automation.WebSphere MQ Insights• Managing WebSphere MQ is often a manualtask, requiring an army of skilled WMQadministrators to manually configure manydisparate WMQ configurations which are oftenquite heterogeneous between environments.Configuration changes, made manually, can easilybe misapplied, omitted, lost or be dependenton deep technical knowledge and historicalperspective on specific environments that onlyexist in individuals heads.• The MidVision WebSphere MQ extension forIBM Rational Automation Framework allows youto manage WMQ configurations centrally in anSCM tool and deploy changes just as you wouldcode. You can snapshot a (Development or“Golden”) WMQ configuration, template it (makeit environment neutral) and use data dictionaryitems to apply environment specific settingsat deployment time. Changes will never againbe misapplied, forgotten, lost or omitted. Thehistorical and technical perspective of why anenvironment was built in a particular way overtime is now maintained in the SCM tool, and notin individual’s heads.• The extension allows you to reverse change(backout) back to a known good configuration. Infact you can move forwards and back through theretained list of historical versions as often as isrequired for any or all of your environments.• The extension also allows you to take pointin time snapshots of WMQ environments forcomparison over time to measure and controlconfiguration drift.MidVision Extension to the IBM RationalAutomation Framework: WebSphere MQMidVision Extensions extend the target platforms of the IBM Rational AutomationFramework which provides organisations with Application Release Automationcapabilities to reduce costs, improve productivity and time to value and assurecompliance. 2. 2. • Rearchitecting Change is a constant and businessesneed to continually evolve their IT infrastructureand operations, build new environments for thingslike Disaster Recovery and automating the buildand deployment of these new environments meansdelivering them faster.MidVision Extension for WebSphereMQ OverviewThe MidVision Extension for MQ automates thedeployment of WMQ binaries, configuration projects andqueue managers. It also provides the capability to:• Take snapshots of your environments• Detect configuration drift by comparingenvironment configurations• Create templates to create new MQSC artifacts thatcan be clonedMidVision Extension for WebSphereMQ TemplatesA ‘Create New’ template is available for environmentcreation from the edit/promote panel using the NewEnvironment Definition function. The WebSphere MQ Plugin template is:• WMQ Create/Configure/Deploy TemplateMidVision Extension for WebSphereMQ Task List• WmqBinaryInstallTask• WmqDeploymentTask• WmqDefaultManageQueueManagerTask• WmqBespokeWmqCommandTaskMidVision Extension to RAF forWebSphere MQ VersionsThe MidVision Extension to RAF for WebSphere MQsupports WebSphere MQ 7.x and 8.x.If you use a version of WebSphere MQ that is notlisted here and you would like to manage it using theMidVision Extensions for RAF please emailsales@midvision.com with the details. For futureversions, we aim to have support within two quarters ofIBM announcing general availability, although customerdemand can accelerate our development roadmap.MidVision ExtensionsMidVision have a number of extensions available for theIBM Rational Automation Framework from either IBM oras plugins direct from MidVision:Extensions ship with:• A Library of commonly used tasks• Wizards extensive help information• Predefined automation library elementswww.midvision.com©MidVision2013.Allrightsreserved.Extensions from IBM• WebSphere MQ• WebSphere Message Broker• Oracle WebLogic• Red Hat JBossTarget Plugins from MidVision• .Net• Apache• Apache Tomcat• IBM Datapower• IBM WebSphere Portal Server• IBM WebSphere Business Process Manager• MySQL• Oracle DBWant this extension?
