  • Why make the jump to Windows 8?A wide range of programmes that incorporates a range of media.A cross-device approach allows consistency for learners moving between devices.Harnesses the power of touch screen technology.“Anywhere, anytime learning- for all!”LearnersTeachersLeadership“Any growth requires a temporary loss of security.” Madeline Hunter
  • How do a variety of Windows 8 devices facilitate learning?School ethos: Choose a device that fits the task, rather than a task that fits the device.Example: When creating a programme in the TV studio, we have chosen to employ pro-quality cameras to ensure the best output. Similarly, tablet PCs complement a practical investigative task by enhancing its recording through photo and video.Windows 8’s cross device approach means that, although devices may vary, there is consistency across all of the devices that a learner may use.The Windows 8 OS makes this joined up approach possible. Personal experience and opinionsDevices regularly used:Desktop PCs (Video editing and processor heavy tasks)Lenovo Twists (Allows for a portable learning environment)Lenovo ThinkPadsSurface Tablets (Windows RT – Used to record investigations on the go)
  • Our IT Worx learning gateway is built within Sharepoint.Personalised learningParental involvement & blurring of the Home School boundaryWeb based collaboration through discussion sites and wiki pages.Example: Research for the scripting of Killerton.
  • Lync is a unified communications platform. It incorporates: IM Voice & Video PresenceHow does our school use Lync to enhance collaboration? Our classes usually work collaboratively across the year group. Lync is often used to share information and ideas between classrooms.Lync is also used to collaborate with link schools such as DaltonschuleElserike in the Netherlands.Year 5 will be undertaking a collaborative video project later this year.Lync call with Alex or Poppy:We have been hearing a lot today about the Enterprise Project. What tools did you use during that?We used Lync to hold group meetings when we were in different parts of the school. This helped us to work together to solve problems. We also use Lync to share files and ideas while we are working. We used PowerPoint and Excel to produce accounts and we presented our business ideas to the school management like on Dragon’s Den.Do they help you to learn? How? Yes, it is important to learn to communicate with friends and Lync and other programmes help us to do that. We use office tools a lot when writing up investigations. Teachers send us the Whiteboard notes and PowerPoints to look at again. What do you use the learning gateway for?We use the learning gateway for:To find out and submit our assignments,To have debates,We use it to work from home as well.
  • “It is important to remember that educational software, like textbooks, in only one tool in the learning process. Neither can be a substitute for well-trained teachers, leadership and parental involvement.” Keith Krueger, CEO of CoSNWindows 8 is streamlining the learning progress:It allows more rapid collaboration between pupils, removing many of the physical boundaries (example of TED project). It has opened up international project opportunities, allowing the children to experience a richer curriculum. The cross-platform approach has allowed children to move with ease between devices. At its core, Windows 8 fits well with a creative, connected curriculum. If curriculum is excellent, then the use of Windows 8 will be excellent.
