  • Using Technology Forward to Improve Education I’ve always liked playing with computers. The year before I started my first teaching job as a geography teacher I spent the summer building revision websites in HTML and Flash. Imagine my surprise when I went into my new classroom and it didn’t have a computer! It didn’t take me long to start to accumulate ICT equipment from other parts of the school – I quickly realised that we were actually well resourced but the equipment was not well used. I raided cupboards, brought things in from home and applied for grants. I did this because I realised that young people in my care were highly engaged and captivated by the technology I was using. It was enhancing my performance as a teacher and getting children excited and re-energised about learning. During my first few years teaching the students in the class I used to always talk about the technology and how much they enjoyed learning about geography. But over time the buzz created by the ICT started to subside, at first I was surprised, but then I realised something that has stuck with me until this day. The technology was still very important to the children, yet in my classroom it had become invisible – it was truly supporting me as a teacher and the young peoples needs as learners. It is not about the technology – it is about good learning and teaching. Our challenge is to think about what makes a good lesson and then think about how you can augment and enhance the experience with technology.
