  • 2. Highlights of HIV and IDS situation in Tanzania Mainland National prevalence 5.7% (down from 7% in 2004) Epidemic has stabilized around 6% among those aged 15-49 years ( Generalized Epidemic) Wide regional variation of HIV prevalence between 0.9%-15% © Plan
  • 3. Highlights of HIV and IDS situation in Tanzania Mainland Drivers of the epidemic include transactional sex; low condom use; trans- generational sex and gender inequalities. National VCT campaign spearheaded by the Head of State has increased uptake to 37% (HIV testing) Tanzania had adopted a multi-sectoral approach in the fight against HIV and AIDS © Plan
  • 4. Plan Tanzania Experience in MF vis-à-vis HIV Urban Project – Solidarity group lending Works in partnership with insurance company to insure loans. Insurance covers cost of default due to death and about USD 73 for funeral expenses This helps reduce stigma among group members (fear that a member could become ill or die and thus fail to repay their loan). © Plan

VSLA: HOW INDIVIDUAL GROUPS HAVE RESPONDED CASE OF UHAKIKA WA CHAKULA Training on HIV and AIDS counselling and HBC from the district Food for the very sick members, counselling, home visits and company for clinic visits for first-time visits. Members rehabilitated by providing soft loans and follow-up loans © Plan
  • 6. Story: Amina- Uhakika wa chakula VSLA group • Was very ill but too scared to go to the clinic • Was counseled, started on ARV and helped back to her feet through small loans from the group. Now has her own IGA and is a village agent © Plan
  • 7. VSLA: HOW IMA HAVE RESPONDED Umbrella organization for VSLAs at village level with membership of between 5-22 VSLA groups. Provide the VSLAs with second tier of savings, insurance funds and loans Builds solidarity and sense of responsibility in the community. Useful in disseminating important messages including on HIV/AIDS. © Plan
  • 8. CASE STUDY: THE CASE OF NYARUGUSU IMA •21 member groups that have a membership of 525 •Meets once a month •120 OVC •School materials, expenses •Tailoring classes •Support of widows •Funeral costs for members © Plan
  • 9. Story: Ndekule • Takes care of five orphans. Member of Maelewano VSLA group (from2008). Received loan (USD 37) that was used to add capital to her vegetable business. • Support from Umoja IMA Nyarugusu school uniforms & materials for the children © Plan
  • 10. Story: FAUSTER- Nyarugusu IMA • Grandmother of six orphans at Nyarugusu • IMA built her a house • Borrowed from her group and runs an IGA © Plan
