  1. 2. <ul><li>Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders that can involve brain and nervous system functions such as movement, learning, hearing, seeing, and thinking </li></ul>
  2. 3. Cerebral Palsy occurs while the infant is still in the womb. It starts with a cut off of oxygen to the baby’s brain.
  3. 4. <ul><li>Bleeding in the brain </li></ul><ul><li>Brain infections </li></ul><ul><li>Head injuries </li></ul><ul><li>Infections in mother during pregnancy </li></ul><ul><li>Severe jaundice </li></ul>
  4. 5. <ul><li>Symptoms very person to person </li></ul><ul><li>They can be very mild to severe </li></ul><ul><li>Left, right, or both sides of the body could be effected </li></ul><ul><li>Symptoms are usually seen before the age of 2 </li></ul>
  5. 6. <ul><li>Abnormal walk </li></ul><ul><li>Muscle weakness </li></ul><ul><li>Tremors </li></ul><ul><li>Hearing or vision problems </li></ul><ul><li>Seizures </li></ul><ul><li>Vomiting </li></ul><ul><li>Slower than normal growth </li></ul><ul><li>Irregular breathing </li></ul>
  6. 7. <ul><li>Blood tests </li></ul><ul><li>CT Scan of the Head </li></ul><ul><li>Electroencephalogram </li></ul><ul><li>Hearing Screen </li></ul><ul><li>MRI of the Head </li></ul><ul><li>Vision Testing </li></ul><ul><li>Results of these tests are helpful in catching cerebral palsy but a full neurological test in needed to be sure. </li></ul>
  7. 8. <ul><li>Between 40% and 50% of children who have cerebral palsy are born premature </li></ul>
  8. 9. <ul><li>Spastic </li></ul><ul><li>Athetoid </li></ul><ul><li>Ataxic </li></ul><ul><li>The most common being spastic. There may also be a combination of the three </li></ul>
  9. 10. <ul><li>INTERPERSONAL THERAPY </li></ul><ul><li>MEDICATION </li></ul><ul><li>Teaches the person how to live to the fullest with their disease. Focuses on learning to manipulate muscles </li></ul><ul><li>A medication called botulinum toxin is given through injections. Used to reduce excessive muscle tighness. </li></ul>
  10. 11. <ul><li>An incision is made in the skin over the affected muscle. Parts of the muscle are then cut to release the tightness. </li></ul><ul><li>May be temporary due to growth and changes in the muscle. </li></ul>
