  • 2. Begins with Phoenicia:
    Phoenician Culture was divided into City-States
    (Just like Ancient Greece)
    Phoenicians were well known for their maritime achievements
    Invented the Bireme (a new kind of ship)
    Made their wealth through trade and colonization
    When the mysterious “Sea Peoples” attacked Egypt ca. 1200 BCE, Phoenician cities expanded and filled the power vacuum

  • 3. Carthage founded in 814 BCE as a colony of the city-state of Tyre
    In 650 BCE, Carthage plants a colony of its own
    From around 539 BCE on, the Phoenician homeland was attacked and conquered by various empires (beginning with Persia)
    Carthage was on its own…
    From humble beginnings
  • 4. One Colony… to rule them all
    When its mother city of Tyre was conquered:
    Many Phoenicians fled to Carthage
    Carthage’s numbers and status grew
    Carthage now assumed the role of Leader
    Carthage used diplomacy, bribery, and violence to subdue all the other Phoenician colonies
