The CardioSmart National Care Initiativeis based, in part, on the growing body ofevidencesuggesting that medical
outcomes can be improved when peoplebecome more knowledgeable and engaged in their own health managementand
care. Getting early detection, prevention, and disease management messages into the mainstream—where peopleat risk
for heart disease are already engaged—has been shown to be an effective way to educate peopleand promotehealth
behavior change and is also a fundamental part ofsuccessful public healthinterventions.
“As people becomemoreknowledgeable about their own heart health management, wellness can improve, early detection
can rise, and prevention can be more successful,”says Ralph Brindis, M.D., M.P.H., President ofthe ACC. “Making small
changes in everyday choices can havea profound effect on heart health. Our partnership with organizations such as
Subway help the ACCengage people through the CardioSmart National Care Initiative and empower them to live
healthier lifestyles and make CardioSmart choices.”
