  2. 2. ThermometerA THERMOMETER measures the air temperature. Most thermometers areclosed glass tubes containing liquids such as alcohol or mercury. When airaround the tube heats the liquid, the liquid expands and moves up the tube.A scale then shows what the actual temperature is.
  3. 3. BarometerA BAROMETER measures air pressure. It tells you whether or not thepressure is rising or falling. A rising barometer means sunny and dryconditions, while a falling barometer means stormy and wet conditions. AnItalian scientist named Torricelli built the first barometer in 1643.
  4. 4. A SLING PSYCHROMETERMeasures relative humidity, using the cooling effect of evaporation. Twothermometers are used in a sling psychrometer. Wet the cloth of one of thethermometers and swing the psychrometer around a few times. Waterevaporates from the cloth, causing the temperatures on that thermometerto be lower the the other.
  5. 5. RAIN GAUGEmeasures the amount of rain that has fallen over a specific time period.
  6. 6. ANEMOMETERMeasures wind speed. The cups catch the wind, turning a dial attached tothe instrument. The dial shows the wind speed.
  7. 7. WEATHER MAPSIndicate atmospheric conditions above a large portion of the Earths surface.Meteorologists use weather maps to forecast the weather.
  8. 8. HYGROMETERMeasures the water vapor content of air or the humidity.
  9. 9. WEATHER BALLOONmeasures weather conditions higher up in the atmosphere.
  10. 10. COMPASSIs a navigational instrument for finding directions.
  11. 11. WEATHER SATELLITESAre used to photograph and track large-scale air movements. Thenmeteorologists compile and analyze the data with the help of computers.
  12. 12. YOUR EYESAre one of the the best ways to help detect the weather. Always keep an eyeat the sky and youll usually be on top of weather conditions.
