Thanks. Very nice presentation. Slideshare also has a feature called slidecast, where you can attach an audio file to a slide show.

It would make for a perfect podcasting presentation :-)

  2. About Me
      • Musician, Sound Engineer & Big Geek :)
      • Host of Linux Outlaws – linuxoutlaws.com
Producer of the Software Freedom Law Show FLOSS advocate, web developer/host and writer. Former .NET developer for the NHS
  3. A Few Questions
    • The things I hope to address today:
      • ...and last but not least, how to make one!
      • What is a podcast?
      • Why should you care about them?
      • What does it involve, costs & kit?
  4. A Podcast Is...
    • A piece of pre-recorded media delivered to subscribers for download via the web.
    • On demand, not broadcast live
    • Can be audio or video
    • Nothing to do with the Apple iPod
    • Emerging media format, still young
    • Subscription based, fans subscribe to an RSS feed and are notified of new episodes as they hit the feed.
    • Usually an mp3 file for audio but could be any format
  5. RSS = Really Simple Syndication An RSS feed is simply a list of content on a site which is updated by when something is published and checked by subscribers. When new content exists they are informed.
  6. Why You Should Care
    • Major promotional tool for your product or service
    • Cost advantages over traditional media – TV or Radio
    • Global reach, a potential International audience
    • The opportunities are endless
    • It's fun to do!! :)
  7. Promotion - Examples
    • Diggnation – Revision3 Internet Television
    • TWIT – This Week In Tech
    • Lullabot Drupal Podcast
    • Will It Blend?
  8. Costs – Audio Equipment
    • Microphones, mixers etc. Don't have to be expensive.
    • Behringer B-1 £69 / AKG C1000 £90 ish
    • A computer for recording with a reasonable sound card or interface. Free software like Audacity
    • Starter packs with everything you need are available from £85
  9. Costs – Servers & Bandwidth
    • Domain name £10 per year or less
    • Large media files can mean lots of bandwidth
    • Dreamhost offer unlimited bandwidth and disk space for $5.95pm right now.
    • Libsyn.com – Unlimited bandwidth, fast connection, personal pages about $5pm
    • Free services like – podbean.com
  10. Cost Comparison
    • A complete setup to last you a year for £100 - £150, equipment included!
    • Compare that to buying a one-off minute slot on a radio network or TV station
    • You can save £1000's plus gain an International reach and talk to people all over the planet
  11. Getting Started
    • Record your content. You need a good idea, something interesting to viewers or listeners
    • Perhaps include some music but make sure you can legally use it.
      • ...or if you're really serious about podcasting you could get a bespoke theme made, ask me about that ;)
  12. Setup your site & feed
    • Creat your site, you can use Drupal or Wordpress quickly and easily.
    • Drupal audio module, WP PodPress plugin
    • Use a feed redirection service like Feedburner.com
    • Send the feed from your site through Feedburner
    • http://feeds.feedburner.com/mypodcast
  13. Upload Your Content
    • Produce a file, mp3, ogg whatever. A finished product
    • Upload your media file and publish, your feed should update.
    • That's it you've published a podcast but there's more you can do...
  14. iTunes and Beyond
    • You can add your podcast to iTunes by submitting the feed address.
    • Promote your show by listing it in directories:
      • PodcastPickle.com
      • PodcastAlley.com
    • Use tools like Digg, Twitter, Identi.ca Last.fm and Facebook to connect with new listeners
  15. What are you waiting for?
    • No better time than now, the media is changing and this is a chance to get on board.
    • If you'd like to discuss production, promotion or anything else to do with podcasting please contact me any time: [email_address]
    • Any questions?
