The principle issue is the PV service life is more than the expected life of the various conventional roof membranes. Therefore, when the roof has to replaced, so does the PV system and then it has to be re-installed.

The bottom two slides illustrates the advantage of using retrofit metal systems in new construction. This project was site-built structural concrete construction for a hotel in southern Georgia. The retrofit framing system was used in lieu of light-gauge pre-engineered trusses due to its competitiveness with other framing methods. The framing for these type of retrofit systems is essentially fabricated in the field. They come to the jobsite in standard cut-lengths (20’ +/-) and measured, cut and erected right on the existing roof top or concrete deck in this application.
